He winced, letting out a groan akin to a deflating balloon. I knew I would regret this. “Can we make it eight? I’ve, uh, got practice until seven and I’m sure you’d rather I take a shower before I come to sit with you. Honestly, the stench of football players is unreal. We’ve had people pass out in the locker room because of it.”

I rolled my eyes at his exaggeration. “Fine. Take a shower before you come to our session.”

“And how do I book you for more days? I’ve got Tuesday afternoon, Wednesday evening and Thursday morning free. I’d love to get as much time with you as possible.”

“Tanner,” I said with a placid smile. I didn’t want him to think I was being rude, but he needed to chill out. He would pass with me around. “Believe me when I tell you that you’ll only need me for one study session a week. I’ll get your grades up within a month and teach you techniques that you’ll be able to carry through your whole college career.”

“Are you sure about that? I’m not exactly academic.” He raised a lacklustre arm before scratching the back of his head as he offered me a somewhat hesitant smile. I could see the insecurity in his eyes, and I knew that I’d be able to change that.

“And I’m not exactly patient.” I mimicked him from earlier. “So you will see results. I’ve never failed with anyone, and I’m not about to start with you. There’s too much riding on it.”

Slowly, I could see that unconfident edge dull. Funny, because in every other aspect of his life, he seemed so confident. But this was his weakness.

“And if you need me for anything else, I’ll be there. Just think of me as your PA for the next few months.”

“Umm, okay,” I drawled out. “On that note, I’m supposed to be meeting a friend for lunch. So I’m going to head out.” I pointed my thumb over my shoulder, and he nodded. “Talk to you later.” I twirled my hands in a wave and turned on my heel, stalking out of the quad.

“Aster, wait. Don’t I need your number?”

“Nope,” I called over my shoulder with a smile. “Friday at seven in the library. I’ll be outside Ralph’s office since I’m sure you know where that is.”

“Okay.” Even just looking back at him, I could almost feel the smile emanating off him. He wasn’t the kind of guy to hide his emotions.

Although I’d never admit it, I was strangely excited to tutor him. It was always nice to work with someone whowantedto work with me, and I was excited to see if I could help him.

Chapter 7

Wrapping a towel around my waist, I wiped down the bathroom mirror and brushed out my hair. It’d had been a long day at practice, and a long week overall, but I was hopeful my study date with Aster tonight would help me get my grades up. Ithadto. I didn’t have any other option at this point.

“Tanner,” Aiden shouted through the door, and I rushed out of the bathroom because he sounded concerned. He hadn’t spoken to us in a while. Hell, we hadn’t seen him since he and Lyss admitted their undying love for each other, so I knew it had to be important. “There’s someone here to see you.”

Fuck.

Did I get it wrong? Was Aster coming here? I checked my phone, and I still had fifteen minutes before we were supposed to meet, but I wouldn’t be surprised if she showed up early. She seemed like the punctual type.

“Who is it?” I asked as I stood by my dresser and shoved on a pair of my sweatpants because I didn’t have time to find some boxers.

“Some chick that you’d be lucky to bang.” I rolled my eyes, but then jumped into action because what if itwasAster? The only other girl I really hung out with at school was Hayden, but since she was with Adam back home, helping him recover from an injury, I knew it wasn’t her.

As I swung open the door, Lyss gave me a small wave. “Hey, Tanner,” She managed to pipe out before Aiden had dragged her into his room. Well, at least if they started now, there was hope they’d be sleeping by the time I came back from my study session.

Focusing on my feet, I hurried down the stairs, fully expecting to see Aster, and wondering what color skirt she’d be wearing tonight. Blue maybe? I hadn’t seen her in a navy-blue pleated skirt yet, and it was getting me all kinds of hot thinking about it.

I know. I know. I should be solely focused on Aster’s tutoring prowess since I managed to convince her to help me, but I couldn’t help but admire how beautiful she was. Especially when I had my hand on her hip the other day. She just kind of… I don’t know… fit.

Admittedly, offering to take her to that ball wasn’t a chore.

With my hand on the banister, I was nearly at the bottom. “I’m so sorry, Teach. I thought we were meeting in the library.”

“Teach, huh?”

I stopped in shock because I must have been hearing things. When I threw my head up in shock and saw my twin standing there with her arms folded and a shit-eating grin on her face, I couldn’t help but smile back.

“Thea?” Without another word, I ran to her, lifting her in my arms and spun her in a circle. “What the hell are you doing here?” As I put her down, I gave her another hug, squeezing tighter just to emphasise how much I missed her.

Smiling mischievously, she looked over her shoulder in the direction of Matty and Jackson. Both guys were sitting on the couch in the sunken living room. Matty had his head down as he typed away on his phone, which was nothing new, while Jackson adjusted the bill of his Carolina Catfish baseball cap as he watched us intently.

“I was just getting acquainted with your roommates.” She gave them a little wink, biting down on her lip. I grumbled in discontent because Thea had always been an outrageous flirt, which came across as a walking red flag to some. It was something that didn’t bother me to an extent because she always knew teammates were off limits. The idea of trying to navigate my sister breaking a teammate's heart one day and throwing them a pass the next was all kinds of awkward that I didn’t want to deal with.
