R’orndidn’t answer her.Insteadhe squeezed untilSamheard a low cracking sound.Slasher69’s hand suddenly went limp.Hehowled in pain and dropped the knife to the floor with a clatter.Helet go ofSam’sthroat too and she was able to back away.ButR’ornwasn’t done yet.

“Youfucker!I’llfucking kill you!”

ThebigKindred’svoice was thick with rage.Whenshe looked up at his face,Samsaw that his normally golden eyes were blazing blood red in the darkness.God—she’d never seen anyone look so scary!

“R’orn…” she began, still backing away, but he still wasn’t paying her any attention.Takingher attacker’s head in his hands, he twisted forcefully to one side.

Itlooked like a move from an action movie, where the hero breaks the bad guy’s neck.ButR’orndidn’t just breakSlasher69’s neck—he ripped his head completely off!

Therewas a horrible wet, fleshy tearing and the crunch of broken bones.Thenblood was fountaining out of the bloody stump asSlasher69’s headless body sank to its knees…and then slumped to the floor.

“OhmyGod!”Thewords came out in a breathless scream beforeSamcould stop them.Sheclamped her hand over her mouth and looked up atR’orn.Somethingwas happening to him…he waschangingsomehow.Gettingbigger…and fur was sprouting on his arms and chest.

“Samantha…”Hisvoice came out in an inhumanly low growl.Suddenly,Samrealized he was standing in a puddle of moonlight spilling from a broken window nearby.

“OhmyGod—yourBeast!Ishe…is he coming out?” she gasped, looking up at him.

R’ornnodded.

“Can’t…hold him back…much longer,” he grated out. “Samantha, run!”

Ashe spoke the last word, she saw his face begin to change too.Itwas elongating in the moonlight, becoming the head of an enormous wolf-like creature.

Thenher paralysis broke.Sheturned and ran, almost stumbling over her own feet as she headed desperately for the side door exit.

Ominousnoises were coming from behind her.Alow, rumbling growling that sounded like words, though she couldn’t make any of them out.Andthen she was out the door and running through the cracked and pitted parking lot, trying not to stumble over her own feet as she raced for her life.

Sherisked a glance behind her and saw, to her horror, that the huge wolf thing thatR’ornhad become was after her!Itwas running on its hind legs but other than that, it looked much more like an animal than a human.Hehadn’t been kidding when he’d said hisBeastwas cursed—it looked just like a werewolf from a horror movie toSam!

Thetrees—maybeIcan hide in the trees!she thought wildly.Shehad to dosomething—theBeastwas gaining on her with incredible speed!

Shemade it out of the parking lot and hit the mini jungle running, but the thick underbrush slowed her down considerably.Shefound herself fighting through the foliage, pushing and shoving desperately to get through the matted tangle of vines and creepers and branches.

Therewere crashing sounds behind her and she knew theBeastwas on her trail.Still, desperation kept her going.Shehad to get away!Maybeif she could make it through the forest, she could lose theBeastand circle back around to her car.Maybe…

Andthen she felt something hook into the back of her shirt.

Shethought it was just another branch but whenSamturned her head, she saw glowing golden eyes behind her.Thething that was hooked into the back of her shirt and holding her back were theBeast’sclaws!Hehad already caught up to her somehow, though it should have been impossible.Hewas too big to squeeze through the underbrush and branches as she had done!

Samgave a desperate tug, throwing all of her body weight forward.Sheheard a low ripping sound as the claws snagged in the cotton fabric ripped open the back of her classicLostBoyst-shirt.Withanother convulsive movement, she wiggled her way free and found herself falling…right into the center of a small clearing in the middle of the tangled forest.

“Oh…oh myGod!” she gasped as theBeastcame crashing through the underbrush, breaking branches and pushing them aside as he came.Sothatwas how he’d managed to get though—by sheer brute force.

Hestood over her andSamsaw that any clothing thatR’ornhad been wearing before he changed was gone now—ripped away from the huge, furry form that loomed over her in the moonlight.

TheBeasthad come for her and there was no getting away, she realized.

Shewas trapped.

SAM

“R’orn? Are…are you in there?”Samwas still flat on her back, looking up at the enormous hairy form looming over her.TheBeaststood on his hind legs and he really did look nine feet tall—as though the top of his head might touch the round white moon above him.

Hewas covered in dark brown fur tipped in gold, though it was hard to see in the moonlight.Justlike the color ofR’orn’shair, she thought faintly.Hispointed ears swiveled towards her and his muzzle wrinkled in a soft, silent growl as he looked down at her.

Samhad never been so frightened in her life!Shethought of how she had foolishly toldR’ornshe wasn’t afraid of hisBeastbecause she’d had “lots of scary pets.”Whata dumb thing to say!Noanimal onEarthcould compare with the enormous, powerful being looming over her now.
