“I just want to check a couple of things. Are we staying here to help out? To get rid of the heads of the families once and for all, get the grandparents back to their homes, and sort whatever damage my father has done to the town?” Rome starts looking around at us all.

We all nod in agreement as I reply, “Absolutely, we need to know that you guys aren’t going to have people sent after you anymore, and I want to help all of the people that have been affected here.”

Rome nods, “Good, that’s settled then. The next thing is where we’re going to stay while we’re helping. I don’t know about Ace and Rip, but I’m not happy staying in my house.”

Ace shakes his head, “Honestly, neither am I, not long term anyway, and this could take a while to sort out. Although judging from everything that happened in such a short amount of time yesterday, we could be home by tomorrow evening.”

Ace’s assessment has us all smiling or chuckling before Rip replies to Rome’s question, “I need to go back to my house to make sure my mother is gone and to release the staff, but I have no intentions of staying there.”

“Why don’t we stay here? It has no memories for any of us, and I’m sure Demelza and Gerald won’t mind. We’re going to be coordinating with them anyway.” I suggest.

Rome nods, “That sounds like a great solution so long as Gerald and Demelza are okay with it.”

“I’m assuming from your reactions to staying in your houses that you have no intentions of taking over from your parents?” I ask.

The guys all share a look before they start shaking their heads almost at the same time, and Ace replies for them all when he says, “Fuck no. I want to help the town, but I don’t want to step into the roles that our parents had. None of us have ever wanted that, and besides that I think our grandparents are more than capable of running the town again.”

“I agree,” Rome replies, “I don’t want any part of running this place. When we’re done helping here, and everything is as it should be, I want to go back home, help with the Ravens, do jobs for D, and just live our lives together. Come back here and see the grandparents every now and again, and Malory, but not make a permanent home here.”

The guys are all nodding in agreement, and Rip adds, “I couldn’t have said it better myself.”

“Okay,” I reply, my heart full and a smile on my face, “I feel the same way. I wasn’t made to stay in one town and have that be my job, and I need the variety we get from the jobs. Plus, I have the Ravens. It would get too complicated trying to run them from here.”

“Good, we’re all in agreement then, we fix the town, and then we go back to our lives.” Rome replies, “So as long as Gerald and Demelza are okay with it, then we need to grab our bags from Ace’s place and bring them up here.”

“We also need to tell them about the grandparents.” I point out, feeling bad that I didn’t tell them yesterday.

“We can do that over breakfast.” Rome points out, and I nod. He asks, “Is that everything?”

“I need to call Sawyer and check in on the Ravens,” I reply.

Ace shakes his head, “I called this morning to see if the animals were okay. Apparently, they’re all having the time of their lives, and Murphy has only tripped him up twice.” He rolls his eyes as we chuckle before he continues, “Sawyer gave me a quick update to say everything was going well, they didn’t have any issues, and that word had spread that we have the support from Mona, and as such they’ve got plenty of jobs that they can get on with. He also said that they’re ready to drop everything and come and help if we need them.”

“That sounds great. Thanks, Ace. I knew that Mona’s backing was going to bring us in more jobs, the word should start spreading soon as well, and we should start getting even more and building our reputation back up as well.” I reply thoughtfully, feeling inordinately proud that Sawyer’s doing so well.

“Oh, before I forget, did the phone call with the grandparents go okay?” Rome asks Ace.

Ace chuckles, “Yeah, it went fine. They asked me for the code word to prove that I wasn’t being held against my will, and when I reminded them that we didn’t have one, they started arguing amongst themselves about whose fault it was. It was highly amusing, and I ended up in fits of laughter and finally managed to convince them that I really was fine and we were going back to my place because that’s where all our stuff was.”

Chapter Four

“At least we know we’re never going to be bored with them around,” Rip chuckles.

“We do need to get back to them reasonably quickly this morning though, because if the staff manage to talk like we know they do, and they find out that we didn’t go back to Ace’s, then I have a feeling they’re going to storm this place, guns blazing.” Mason points out.

“Well shit, you’re right,” I reply, somewhat amused.

“Shall we go down to breakfast then?” Ace replies. “I’m fucking starving, and I swear I can smell bacon all the way up here.”

“If anyone can, it will be you.” Rip chuckles, heading toward the door as he adds, “Let’s get going then before this place gets stormed by grandparents.”

I burst out laughing. I can’t help it; the image that he’s painted is fucking hilarious, and for some reason, in my mind, the grandparents are on horses and in full armor as they storm the place.

It’s not until we get to the stairs that I start to smell the bacon that Ace said he could smell, and I realise just how hungry I actually am. So hungry, in fact, that I end up taking the stairs two at a time in order to get to it quicker.

“Good morning,” Gerald greets me as I practically run into the kitchen.

“Morning, dear,” Demelza smiles, clearly not bothered by my manners as I head straight to the coffee and then start piling my plate high with bacon, eggs, toast, and sausage.
