“Sounds good to me,” Rome agrees, his smile as wide as mine.

“Great, well, at least we know what we’re telling the Conspiracy when they arrive in a few days, and we did it really quickly, which means we get to take it easy until then,” Mason points out with a relaxed smile.

“You say that, but I bet we end up helping the grandparents get set up and ripping stuff out of their houses that they don’t want in there.” Rome chuckles.

“True, we’re not good at staying still,” Ace replies.

“I want to get to know Malory, it’s weird we were so close when we were kids, but we’re all entirely different people now, and we’ve got to start over from the beginning,” Mal says.

“I do too, but that might be hard to do over the next few days since she’s on her mini vacation before her exams,” Mason reminds.

Mal’s eyes roll as he replies, “Oh shit, yeah, I’d completely forgotten about that. There’ll be plenty of time to get to know her now that we’ve found her and know where she is.”

“Definitely,” Mase agrees and then adds, “We can get to know our grandparents, though and I know for a fact that they want to get to know us.”

“I’d like that,” Mal replies.

“I want to get to know mine better too. I’ve already asked Cecil when would be the best time to go over the security cameras in the town and work out any blind spots so that we can put up some more cameras.” Ace explains, “I’m actually meeting him at his place tomorrow afternoon to go over it all.”

“That’s a great idea, the last thing we want to do is leave anyone here vulnerable, and they’re going to have to keep security tight for a while just in case the smugglers or buyer doesn’t heed our warning.” I point out.

“Exactly.” Ace replies, “Which is another reason why I want to get it done now and not wait until after they’re gone, we want to make sure that they’ve completely left the town.”

“Good thinking.” Rome replies and then adds with a raised eyebrow, “I’m assuming that at some point over the next few days, you’re going to need us to help put up cameras in the blind spots?”

“Yep,” Ace grins, “they’ll be the normal ones I use, so they’re really easy to set up.”

“Good,” Rome replies as I breathe an internal sigh of relief. I’m not going to lie; I had a slight panic then, thinking I was going to have to do something involving tech, something that I’m very definitely not good at. In fact, I’m more likely to break it than I am to set it up correctly.

“What about you, Blue? What are you going to do? We all know that you aren’t going to lie around the house and do nothing. I don’t think you’re capable of it.” Ace asks me knowingly.

I chuckle as I shake my head, “Same as you guys; I want to get to know my grandmother and to know Gerald as my grandfather and not my butler. I also want to know anything that they can tell me about my father; I want to get to know him as much as I can, considering that there’s no chance that I’ll ever meet him,” I pause as those words wash through me, I never really thought that he was alive, but to have it confirmed stings and I’m not even sure that I’m using the right word to describe what I’m feeling.

“Are you okay?” Rip asks gently, which means I must have paused for longer than I intended, and I glance up to see them all looking at me with worry in their eyes.

I clear my throat, “Yeah, I’m okay. I knew he wasn’t alive. I never thought he was, but it’s still kind of hard to say it out loud.”

“That’s understandable. There was probably a small part of you that, even though you were certain that he was dead, still hoped that he wasn’t, and it’s that part of you that is feeling disappointed and sad now.” Rip replies with understanding.

“Yeah, I know you're right, but I’m hoping that it will sting a little less when I know a bit more about him,” I reply. “I’d also like to know more about our family specialty and hopefully how to make some basic poisons, and Grandma mentioned healing things as well. I want to learn it all.”

“I’d be interested in learning about that as well,” Malachi says and then adds, “So if you feel like teaching me after she’s taught you or you want help with practicing, then let me know.”

“I will, definitely,” I reply with a smile.

**********

The next day we all disperse to do the various things that we mentioned that we wanted to do yesterday since we only really have the next three days to get it all sorted, and then the Ravens are arriving, and we need to go over the plan for the smugglers with them. I’m not risking leaving any eventuality not planned for and then ending up with one of my team or my guys hurt. Nothing is worth any of that.

I’ve just said goodbye to the guys as they’ve gone to see their grandparents, and I’m wondering what I’m going to do with the rest of my day. I mean, I could’ve gone with one of the guys; they all asked me to go with them, even Ace, who then added that I’d be really bored watching him and Cecil sort through the security cameras and work out blind spots, I politely declined the offer after agreeing with him wholeheartedly.

“Good morning, dear,” Demelza greets me as she comes out of the kitchen. “Where are your men? It’s not often you’re not accompanied by one of them.”

I smile at her very accurate description and reply, “They’ve all gone to help out the grandparents.”

Demelza’s smile grows, “Well, in that case, would you like to learn how to make some basic poisons with me? I’ve got to restock them anyway and was planning to do it today. It would be nice to have some company.”

I nod, “I was actually going to ask if we could do that. I want to learn about our family’s specialty. I’d also like to learn about my father, whatever you can tell me.”
