And that does the trick.

Screaming, Sydney sits upright in bed, her eyes throwing daggers at me as she seethes.

“What thehellwas that for?”

“You weren’t waking up,” I smirk, setting the cup down on my nightstand before rifling through drawers and finding a pair of jeans and a T-shirt.

“My shirt is wet, you asshole,”

I look back toward her as she pulls her shirt from her body. Sure enough, the entire top half clings to her. “That’s unfortunate,” I tell her, turning back before I can focus too much on the hard peaks of her nipples showing through it.

“What am I going to wear?”

“That sounds like a you problem. Figure it out. It’ll dry eventually.” I cringe at how much I sound like her sister.

“Can I at least take a shower?”

I think about it for a second, almost inclined to say yes. Maybe she wouldn’t be as much of a bitch.

But we don’t have time.

“Not right now. If you tell us everything we need to know, then maybe. But Jerry wants us downstairs in a couple minutes.”

She groans as I pass by the bed and into the bathroom to change, flopping back down on my mattress. If she weren’t so infuriating, I think it would be cute.

* * *

It’s definitely over ten minutes by the time we’re downstairs, and judging by the tense look on Jerry’s face, she’s not pleased with me about it.

I shrug, not knowing what else I can really do.

Sydney drops into the chair Jerry was sitting in the night prior, immediately crossing her arms over her chest with a huff. Her hair is tangled, and her shirt still wet, clinging to her body. My eyes linger a moment too long, and I mentally slap myself out of it.

There’s no interest there.

“Nice of you to join us,” Jerry tells her as she leans back against the couch, her arms outstretched on either side of her. To the right sits Brandon and Elena, sitting a little closer than they usually do. Upon seeing my eyes on them, Elena narrows hers, scooting away just an inch. Zach is to the left of Jerry, his oversized shirt swallowing him whole as he shoots a smile at Sydney.

The light tapping of toenails alerts me to Maverick’s arrival. Jerry’s Doberman, a rescue she took from a terrible man a couple of years ago. He’s one of the sweetest dogs you’ll ever meet, but he looks intimidating as hell.

Walking up to Sydney, Maverick sniffs her once, his ears flattening as he looks back at his mom and back to Sydney, almost confused. Sydney sits, exhausted, and watches as the dog decides she’s not worth the brainpower and goes to sit beneath Jerry’s legs.

“Are you guys going to tell me what this is?” Sydney asks, bored.

“Are you going to tell us what we want to know?” Jerry replies in a mocking tone, annoyed.

Sydney doesn’t flinch. She’s her parents’ daughter. It just took her a bit to settle. “I could possibly do that if you told me what it is you wanted to know.”

Jerry’s eyes narrow as she grinds her molars and watches her, the room silent.

“This is Elena,” I start, figuring introductions are the best place to begin. “That’s Brandon and Zach. We have one other person who lives here full time, Kim, but she’s out on a mission right now and isn’t going to be back for quite some time.”

Jerry looks over at Zach, a pout on her full lips. “Did you scare her off?” she asks, humor in her voice.

“I didn’t do anything!”

Brandon rolls his eyes. “They got in a fight before they left, so she’s probably going to take even longer to come home.”

“We resolved it before she left; everything is fine.”
