Sydney’s brows furrow. “What do you mean?”

“Whenever there’s shady shit going on with us, they always start talking about aliens. Gets the attention off of it.

She stares at me for several beats before going back to her work.

Instead, we attacked the company from the outside. Anyone involved with it was given to Fallen Angels across the country on strict orders to take them out.

After that happened, Sydney would go dark on all theemployeesthey had. No more contact. No more money spent.

Finally, they would dissolve the company, getting rid of any and all information about it. Documents were shredded, and buildings burned.

The Killing Field was dug up and dealt with. Shockingly, it didn’t make much news at all because of a large UFO sighting that spawned a press conference.

Sydney and I have thought about changing our names because of what happened with Atlee Enterprises, but we haven’t decided yet. I’m not sure how much of a real threat mercenaries who aren’t getting paid are.

But one thing I am serious about is her protection.

“I just want to go to Target, Ronan. That’s all. Just Target.”

“I could go with you. I’ll carry all of your things.”

She signs, spinning on her heel to look me square in the eye.

EPILOGUE

One yearlater

“You’re going to ruin the surprise for yourself if you keep insisting on knowing. You’re about to find out.”

I sigh, crossing my arms over my chest.

It’s a chilly fall day, and although I love the summer, there’s something about the fall that just feels like freedom. Like letting go of expectations. Like book clubs and lattes and slippers.

There’s something about fall that feels like home.

Just like Ronan.

“Is this a good surprise? I ask him.

“Why would it be a bad one?”

I scoff. “You’ve had bad surprises before.”

I can feel the eyeball from here.

“Jesus Christ, what’s taking them so long?” I hear Jerry say. She doesn’t sound too far away. Interesting.
