Jeffrey’s eyes find Jerry’s, as if he’s just realizing she’s here. As if there are two other people with me.

“She really did give you up, didn’t she? We were taking bets on whether she brought you out back and drowned you.”

Jerry doesn’t move a muscle.

My mother was an awful person, and the world is better without her, but she was also a victim too. I think it’s important to recognize that.

Ronan shifts uncomfortably next to me. “Did you know?” I ask him, his gaze intense on mine.

He shakes his head. “I didn’t know.”

I look back to Jerry. “He didn’t,” she confirms. “I got word they were going to take out a little girl. Their operation was growing, and we had just had to deal with a girl from fucking Seattle being targeted. We were all put in danger because of it. What better way to get the plan moving along than to kill them.” She shrugs as if nothing she’s saying is problematic.

“That’s very sweet of you,” Jeffrey quips up from his seat. “But—”

Before he can finish, there’s a bullet hole between his eyes.

Ronan and I turn to Jerry, jaws hanging open.

“What the hell was that.”

“We got all we needed to know. No use hearing him drone one and say something else fucked up, right?” she shrugs.

“I kind of pictured killing him.”

She rolls her eyes. “You wouldn’t have. And I wouldn’t have let you. You’re too good for that.”

Ronan holds up his hand. “She killed a man in Texas.”

Jerry’s eyes widen. She looks impressed. Maybe even proud.

“Well, he was about to shoot Ronan, so…” I trail off. She’s right. The thought of it makes me feel a little sick.

We look back at the body in front of us.

“Should we move him?” I ask.

Jerry thinks about it for a second. “Nope,” she says quickly as she reaches for his coat, pulling out his phone.

“Sydney, come hold his eyes open for me.”

I rear back, not believing what I’m hearing right now.

“Do you want to cancel this hit or not?” she snaps, and I do as she asks.

“Wait, you really killed your parents?” Zach asks at the dinner table.

“Why is everyone surprised?”

“We’re surprised that you hid it from all of us mostly,” Brandon says through a mouthful of food.

“Was I supposed to meet Sydney for the first time and go, “hey, I’m your secret twin sister, and by the way, I killed our parents. Just saying. Now, please work with me on this mission.”

Elena looks at me, her eyes flashing with sympathy. “Would that have worked on you?”

I shake my head, leaning back in my seat and crossing my arms.
