I count down from ten as the door opens, and when it’s done, we rush out.

And we’re immediately met with bullets raining down on us.

There are men all around, hiding in small crevices, and Sydney and I stand back-to-back, taking them out as fast as we possibly can.

“I got one!” she yells, excited.

“We need to get more than just one, keep going,” I cry out above the shots.

The men start coming out of hiding, circling us. I grab her hip as we watch them close in on us. She grabs my hand, interlocking our fingers, holding on for dear life.

She’s my lifeline.

But suddenly, bullets are flying from another direction, taking out the men surrounding us one by one.

I look around, trying to figure out where it’s coming from.

But there, at the top of the roof, sits Jeremy.

He nods once to me, aiming his large sniper rifle before taking out another. And another. Ronan and I get back to work, taking out more and more as we go. They keep coming, and I have to wonder how much money they put on our heads that people all over the country would be looking. This many people is insane.

When it doesn’t seem like there’s any more, I yank on her hand, leading her in the direction of the airport. We burst through the doors, panic swelling in our chests as we keep moving.

Passing by a kiosk, I swipe a burner phone, stuffing it quietly into my jacket as we leave. When we’re finally far enough away, I take it out, ripping the box open to get to it. Opening the back, I cut two small wires, switching them. Sydney watches me, her brows furrowed.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m getting us out of here,”

Plugging in Jerry’s number, I hit call, holding it up to my ear.

“Where the fuck are you?” Jerry’s voice comes from the other end of the phone, and I almost want to chuckle at the fact she knew it was me despite the blocked caller.

“We’re in DC. At the airport. Where are you?”

“You can’t come home.”

My blood runs cold, despite the fact that I was assuming this would happen.

“There’s a nationwide hit out on you two. Millions of dollars. There’s no way you can come home right now.”

I throw my hands up in the air, looking around the airport. Sydney stands only a couple feet from me, her blood starting to seep through her bandaged hand.

“You need to take him out. Find him, kill him, and make sure that the hit is cleared. I don’t know what to tell you, Ronan, there’s nothing we can do here. I’ve tried.”

“Can you please try harder?” I grit through my teeth, grinding my molars.

“We can keep trying, but you need to find Jeffrey.”

“He was just in fucking Texas, Jerry do you expect us to go all the way back there?”

“I’ll ask the others to see if we can find him. Get the Texas Angels on it.”

“Matthew can’t leave.”

She pauses. “I know that.”

“Okay.”
