I look back at Sofia who is still regarding Sethos with a hard stare. She glances at me. “What do you think, Jessie? You don’t have to answer straight away either.”

I shrug. “It felt fine the other night, and I do want more work.”

“Perfect.” Sethos smiles as if it’s settled. “I already sent through a booking request. Can I expect you at nine tomorrow night?”

Sofia cuts in before I can answer. “She’ll accept or deny the booking request through the app as usual. I’m going to make sure both parties have signed the full contract and if anything looks off, I’ll be calling our security team.”

Sethos smirks. “Of course. I’m sure you take great care of your workers. Rest assured I’ve thought of everything.”

A quick nod to Sofia and me, then he turns and slinks back across the bar to the exit.

Sofia’s hand on my arm draws my attention back to her. “You don’t have to agree to this if it’s not what you want, Jessie.”

I smile. I’m probably half faking it. There’s something I don’t like about Sethos, but not enough to put me off. “I’m fine. Really. And thank you.”

Sofia waves over Maurice. “I think we need another round here.”

But I shake my head. “Nah. It’s OK. Thanks.”

He leans on the bar and his look turns serious. “Don’t ever feel like you have to, yeah? And don’t feel ashamed if you have to use the emergency contact number. It’d be my pleasure to come and deal with anyone who tries to give you grief. You hear?”

Is it strange that these two almost feel like friends, although I’ve only just met them? If only everyone I’ve met so far in Heartstone was this awesome.

Sofia gives my arm a final pat. “I still have a good feeling for you. Sethos definitely isn’t the one, but there is someone. And you’ll meet him soon.”

Jessie

I glance down at the instructions Sethos sent me again.

ArtfulMind: Use the back stairs to climb to the east tower. Go ahead and play music and wear whatever you like. Dance for at least fifteen minutes. After that you’re free to go.

OK then.

I find the back stair. The door isn’t locked, so I push it open and climb up, exiting the staircase at the top. The wind blows my hair in my face as I open the door and lifts the hem of my jacket a little, sending a chill over my bare legs. It’s going to be a cold one, dancing up here in lingerie, but I’ll warm up with my movements, I hope.
