I’m not. I’ve never been. As a slave, I’m not even supposed to look people in the eyes, much less linger on them and think about what’s behind them. If anything, I’m good at figuring out emotions from people’s voices. Just the slightest hint of anger sets me off because with Malachi, that slight hint would always explode into something dangerous.

But Laiken is different. He meets my eyes without anger or shame. His gaze is powerful and intense.

“I don’t know,” I answer.

He rises up on three of his tentacles and looks down at me. The rings around his eyes flare. “And what is it you think I might be feeling?”

I’m afraid to say it. And yet at the same time, the fascination is there, too. What if I’m right? What if that really is the reason he wants me here?

“This is a little embarrassing to say,” I manage, looking down at the sand. Not far away, the water is splashing and flowing.

“Enough apologies,” he says, and his face moves closer to mine. Another tentacle lands on the sand behind me. “What is it you see in me?”

I feel myself blushing. Hopefully, he can’t see it. “Sometimes when you look at me, I see something that looks a lot like… desire.”

There’s a silence. “And what would you say if you were right?”

The question startles me. Among the dark elves, when an elf desires a human, that’s the end of the story. He wants to keep me, but he also cares about me.

He desires me.

It should be strange and frightening to be desired by a creature like Laiken. I should be disgusted.

But I’m not. I don’t feel any of the things I’m supposed to. Instead, I feel curiosity. And maybe even excitement.

“I don’t know,” I admit. “I’m not even sure I know what it would be like. With you, I mean.”

“Do you want to?”

And there’s no other choice but to say it. To put it all out there.

“Yes, I do.”

With no preamble, one of his tentacles lifts up off of the sand and begins to creep up along my leg, another maneuvering around my waist and lying me down on the ground.

His skin is cold, but not unpleasantly so. It’s also not as wet as I expected. It’s almost totally smooth, and it moves up my calf gently and slowly. Every movement of it is completely intentional and under his control.

“You are right that I desire you,” he says. “In my long time living in the ocean, I have learned to appreciate beauty in all its forms, especially those that aren’t mine. And yet when I saw you that night, you still startled me. You have a beauty entirely unique to you. The moment I saw it, I knew I had to understand more. I had to understand you.”

And then, the other tentacles on me.

It was possible to keep track of the movements of just one, but suddenly, I can feel a tentacle on both of my arms, on both of my legs, and my waist. All of them move together but also separately, and to feel them all at once is completely overwhelming.

Each arm is covered with suckers. They touch my skin lightly without locking on the way I’ve seen them do, and they feel just like kisses. I am, suddenly, covered in small, strange kisses.

“You do not know how much I’ve thought about exploring your body like this.”

One of his tentacles creeps up my breast and presses a sucker against my hard nipple. I gasp. The sensation is totally unlike anything I’ve ever felt before. An entirely new form of pleasure.

“I…” It’s difficult to speak amongst all the feelings coursing through my body. Meanwhile, his head hangs over my stomach, looking down over me.

“How do you want me to touch you?”

“I don’t,” he replies.

I try to raise an arm to stroke his face, as an experiment, but true to his word, the tentacle which has wrapped around it suddenly tightens and pins my arm against the sand. I realize that there is a tentacle firmly wrapped around every one of my limbs. I couldn’t move, even if I wanted to.

And it is good to just relax into the sensation all over my body.
