“Let me take a quick look to make sure this leads somewhere.” The man stepped over the small mound of ice on the threshold and disappeared into the dark. It wasn’t long before he came back with a smile. “It leads to a door with a rusty lock that opens to an empty alleyway outside. Let’s go.” He gestured for Katsuki to go first.

Asu followed her, holding Sychar, then Qhasheik and Jelena went through.

Glancing behind him, Zamush made sure the Akurns hadn’t gotten through the wall of ice. He frowned when he couldn’t hear them trying to get through. Shit, that could only mean one thing. Going through the makeshift doorway, he sped toward the steep incline to follow the little group.

“The Akurns have stopped trying to get through the ice. I think our little friends figured out we’re no longer there.” Something was off. How did the Akurns know where they were in the first place? And why would they stop trying to get to them? Especially since they had to have seen they’d taken Sychar from his cell.

Abiditan pushed open the rusty door, causing an echoing ear-piercing squeak.

Dammit. Now everyone within earshot would know where they were. He was about to caution them when the others disappeared, following Abiditan outside.

Zamush clenched his jaw. Asshole was going to get them killed if he didn’t stop to check things first. No choice but to follow them into the alleyway. His gut tightened, and his inner warning system screamed. Any time he ignored his instincts, it always turned out to be a grave mistake. “Wait just a minute! I think we should...”

He skidded to a halt when his troop was surrounded by Akurns.

Once again, the same Akurn captain opened his mouth.

The little group wasn’t interested in hearing anything the male had to say.

Katsuki dropped to one knee and pulled out an electron blaster and fired.

Damn, the woman was one of the best sharpshooters Zamush’d ever seen.

Qhasheik pulled a battle ax from the harness at his back and threw it.

Like a boomerang, it came back. No matter how embedded its blade had been in its target.

Abiditan grabbed a harmless-looking stick from his waist and jerked it. The thing expanded, creating one of those laser spears that disintegrated whomever it stabbed. In his other hand, he used an electron blaster with stunning accuracy.

As for Jelena, she used her crossbow with mind-numbing efficiency. Instead of the tip of the arrow being a sharpened point, it was a thin blue light. When it touched her target, men turned into a vast block of ice before shattering. Once released, the arrow pierced several opponents before sliding back into her open hand.

Holy fuck! That was the sexiest thing he’d ever seen.

Asu scrambled to the alleyway for protection, gripping Sychar’s unconscious form, with his back against a wall.

Okay, enough fun. It was his turn to wrap this up. Stepping in front of his friends, he confronted the Akurns with a wave of his hand to hold them in a massive enthrallment. Satisfied their enemy couldn’t move, he turned to his companions. “I can hold them long enough for you to get back to the ship.”

Jelena frowned. “What about you? We can’t just leave you here.”

“I didn’t think you cared.”

Her face flushed as she lowered her eyes. “I, um...”

A loud blast from the other side of the prison shook the ground.

“Will you have enough time to teleport back to the ship?” Abiditan asked.

Tearing his eyes away from Jelena, Zamush looked at Abiditan crouching as he held Katsuki’s arm.

A distant metallic whirling sound came closer.

The Akurns must’ve released their military drones.

“I’ll probably be there before you. Go before those drones get here.”

With a curt tilt of his chin, Abiditan released Katsuki. He stood and addressed the others. “The man knows what he’s doing. Let’s go.” Without another word, he led the group away.

Jelena gave him one last glance before she followed.
