Rodney twirled his coat around him, pulling it tight, even though the temperature really didn’t call for a coat.

“How was school?” Griff asked, holding his breath. Rodney had talked about quitting.

“Same old crap. Different day.”

“Where do you see yourself in five years?” Griff asked, knowing at that age he hadn’t seen himself anywhere. He’d been very much like Rodney. Very much into anything that was dangerous, dark, daring. He flirted with alcohol and drugs and hung around other people who did the same. He’d been lucky, or maybe he should say God protected him. A lot of people he knew died young.

“Somewhere far away from here,” Rodney said, sounding bitter.

“Do your parents know that?”

“No.” Rodney laughed with derision. “If they did, they wouldn’t care.”

“Are you sure about that?”

“Yeah.” Rodney snorted. They’d reached the sand, and they turned north without saying anything. “Dad’s too busy with his mistress. I think my mom is having an affair too.”

Ah. That explained a lot. It was the first time Rodney had shared what was going on at home. It made sense, but it complicated things too. Griff couldn’t help to put his family back together.

“You know, parents aren’t perfect. We like to think that they are, but they’re human just like we are.”

“My parents don’t even try. They’re too busy looking out for themselves.”

Rodney probably hit it on the head. Marriage counselors might say that money was one of the things that caused the majority of divorces, but it was just a matter of selfishness, from what Griff could figure. After all, it took two to fight.

And it took someone who was willing to give up their “rights” in order to get along.

It wasn’t something that most people had any experience in doing.

Chapter 4

“It’s pretty hard to do the right thing all the time. Maybe you don’t see the struggle that your parents have, or maybe their hearts desire to do right, and they just don’t have the character to follow through.” Griff stared out at the water.

“A lack of character, that’s for sure.” Rodney stood beside him.

“Don’t you want to be different?” Griff asked. He didn’t want to push the kid into doing what he thought he should do. It had to be a choice Rodney made.
