Well, that gave him brownie points anyway. Kristin thought she knew who the kid was. She thought that Griff from the diner had been meeting him along the beach. The kid had been slowly sinking down, traveling with the wrong crowd and wearing black, and looking more and more like someone who was working for the devil. The idea of her sweet little girl being around someone like that...

But she was obviously very fond of him.

“Maybe I can see if I can do something with him,” Luke said slowly.

“I think he just feels really hurt about what happened with his dad. He wasn’t that close to his parents, but at least they were together and he felt like they were honest people with integrity. His dad cheating just messed everything up.”

They were quiet for a bit. Kristin was eager to get Becky put to bed so she could talk to Luke. Surely he had some ideas of what they could do. Obviously, Becky couldn’t help him, but maybe they could. Or maybe they could help Griff, who seemed to have a rapport with him.

“I told him I wasn’t going to be over anymore. He was happy for me that I have a family. He’s that kind of person. He wants to see good things happen to me. He understood. But... I’m worried about him.”

“Kristin and I will talk about things we can do,” Luke said. “I’m sure there’s some way or maybe multiple ways that we can give him a hand.”

“I promise that I won’t go out again at night. Not without you guys knowing where I’m going.” Becky spoke without them having to prompt her. Kristin wanted to squeeze her and give her a bear hug and rain kisses all over her face, but she didn’t figure that Becky would appreciate that, so she refrained.

She didn’t know what Luke had in mind, but she was feeling very optimistic about Becky, about their lives together, about being able to help the boy that Becky cared about.

Chapter 14

Griff lay on the sofa, tired. It had been a long night. He hadn’t slept much, because the sofa was not only hard, but it wasn’t nearly long enough for him, and he hadn’t been the slightest bit comfortable. Not to mention, the conversation that he’d had with Chi had been on his mind the whole time.

She hadn’t said that she reciprocated any of his feelings, but she had apologized for not treating him very well.

That really wasn’t what he wanted, it wasn’t even close to what he wanted, but he thought that maybe he would just have to take what he could get and not be greedy for more. He might not ever get what he wanted. But if he loved someone, he was going to treat her the way love dictated and not allow his actions to depend on her feelings.

That just seemed to be the right way to handle everything, although he wasn’t sure whether he would be able to do it or not. It was a pretty hard thing to show love again and again to someone who didn’t care about you.

The thought had kept him tossing and turning all night, but he must have dozed off, because as he slowly came to consciousness, he could smell...coffee. And he realized he had heard some clanging and banging like Chi might have fed the stove and built up the fire.

How long had it been since someone else had made coffee for him first thing in the morning?

A long time. If ever. The pastor who had helped him get his life turned around hadn’t drunk coffee.

Griff hadn’t drunk coffee until he became a lawyer and was working eighteen-hour days. At that point in time, all he thought about was becoming rich and successful, and coffee had helped him stay awake and alert and do more in a day than he normally would have been able to.

Now it was an addiction he didn’t want to think about stopping.
