Not even James.

“You coming with me?” he asked, as she tried to remember when she felt the blast of air. How much of this had he seen?

She supposed he didn’t need to have seen any of it. All he needed to do was look over and recognize James as the liar who had been at the diner multiple times, giving her attention, and she had been lapping it up.

Was she going with Griff?

Unlike James, Griff had never lied to her. In fact, as she stood there, the seconds slowly ticking by, she realized that since the day Griff had walked into her diner, he had never stopped trying to do what was best for her. He had worked alongside of her, put in just as many hours as she had, worked to make the diner profitable, figured out recipes that the town would love, and he had done it all while being kind and respectful to her and helping her any way he could.

Maybe she’d taken him for granted. More than a little.

And now, somehow he’d asked where she was and had shown up just when she needed him. She allowed a little smile to curve up her lips, even though the inside of her chest still hadn’t eased. Pain, disgust, disappointment, all mixed with something that felt a lot like...trust. Griff was someone she could trust. Especially at a time like this, when the rest of her world seemed to be turning upside down.

“Yes.”

Her word made him smile just a little, although his taciturn nature did not allow his lips to turn up more than a fraction of an inch.

His hand stretched out, and she looked down.

Without thinking about it, she reached out and put her hand into his.

“Let’s go home,” he said, his eyes meeting hers. To her surprise, there seemed to be a question in them. Home? Was he talking about the diner?

It seemed like an odd thing to say, but she nodded, squeezed his hand, and followed him as he walked out the door.

Chapter 6

She had come.

Griff couldn’t believe it. He felt like he had risked everything by walking in and asking Chi to go with him.

He’d seen there was a big scene, that Chi had to have seen that the lawyer was at least with someone else, even if she didn’t realize he was married. He doubted the woman that man was with was his wife. But Griff really didn’t know.

Regardless, Chi had chosen him and had taken his hand.

He led her out of the door and down the stairs.
