Wes shook his head. “Don’t be. It’s good stuff. Megan wanted it?”

“Yeah.”

“She’s always had that sweet tooth.”

Had she? I rolled the idea around in my head and tried to make it stick. It wouldn’t settle. Sure, she liked an occasional sweet, the same as most people, but that was it. Thankfully, I didn’t have to comment because the server came back with a large to-go cup.

“Here you go.”

I took the cup and reached for my wallet. “How much?”

“Don’t worry about it. Your tip more than covers it.” The server smiled and wandered off.

“What did you tip her?” Wes jabbed me in the side. “That your new way to get girls to look in your direction? It’s a good angle.”

“No.” I glanced in the direction the server had headed. Had she thought I was hitting on her? “I was just being nice.”

“Uh-huh.” Wes shot me a knowing grin. “Come on. Let’s get this food back to the bookstore before Megan begins to wonder if you were just joking with her about buying her dinner.”

I didn’t bother to sigh. As we crossed the bar to the door, I thrust the bag of food at Wes. “Since you’re crashing this party, you can at least make yourself useful.”

He took the bag. “Where’d you park?”

“I walked from the bookstore.” I wasn’t going to explain any further than that unless he asked. Even then, I was sure exactly how to phrase things. Megan had been helping me with the fundraiser. Had I technically needed her input? No. But it would still pass as an excuse.

Probably.

“You want a ride?” Wes pointed to where his car sat.

“How’d you swing that spot?”

“Clean living?” He grinned at me and started toward his ride.

I fell into step beside him. “Clean living, huh?”

“Sure. You should try it.” Wes’s words were full of laughter. “Or maybe I happened to be driving by just as someone else was leaving and took it as a sign to eat here.”

“Aha.”

That was much more likely. Not that Wes was a bad guy. He loved Jesus the same as the rest of us in the group. But he’d also been the most enthusiastic about embracing his new life as a billionaire. The Tesla model S I climbed into was one of many cases in point.

“This is new.”

“Yeah. It just came. I like it. The acceleration is amazing.” After he checked the traffic, he proved his point by tearing away from the curb.

“You’re going to get so many tickets.”

“Nah.” Wes shook his head. “Anyway, I like it for driving around town. It holds a decent amount in the trunk, too.”

“Your other cars don’t get lonely?”

He sent me a bland stare. “You could always get another car yourself, instead of being jealous of mine. There’s no law that says you can’t spend the money. You know that, right?”

“Hey. I bought a house.”

“True.” Wes pulled into a spot near the bookstore. How he had such great parking luck was a mystery. “Isn’t that nicer than walking?”

“Faster, at least.” I grinned and pushed open the car door then grabbed Megan’s drink from one of the cup holders. “You got the food?”
