“Yeah.” I pointed to the doors. “Two more bedrooms up here, a bathroom, and a study. There are some nice built-ins.”

Megan peeked in the doorways. “You could at least set these up as guest rooms. Get a bed and a dresser. Maybe a chair—they’re good enough size rooms they could handle that.”

“If your offer to help really stands, I’ll take you up on it. We can go shopping or you can send me links or something?”

“Links?” She shook her head. “Oh, Cody. Tell me you aren’t buying furniture online.”

“Well. Not yet. But I did some looking. Just to kind of get an idea.” I hunched my shoulders. Was it really that bad? How was I supposed to know what I was looking for if I didn’t at least poke around online first?

She pointed a finger at me. “No buying. You have to touch it first. Otherwise, how will you know what the fabric feels like? Or how firm it is?”

I opened my mouth but closed it again quickly. It wasn’t like I knew better. Although I didn’t think online furniture shopping was really that bad. But, well, Megan would know.

“Okay. Ready to see the master?”

Megan’s eyebrows lifted. “They’re called ‘primary’ now.”

I probably didn’t want to know why. I just nodded and gestured to the stairs. “It’s the whole level. It’s kind of nice. Although it’s more space than I had in the apartment with Noah. Probably bigger than the whole apartment Noah and I shared, actually.”

She laughed. “Why am I not surprised that you don’t know for sure?”

I had no answer to that. I just stood at the bottom of the stairs and put my hands in my pockets. “I used the furniture I already had. If it’s tragic, we can upgrade. I’m not attached to any of it. It’s not heirloom or anything.”

“I can tell.” Humor laced her words. Megan shook her head as she walked through the mostly empty sitting room area, past the fireplace in the three-quarter wall that divided the sitting space from the bedroom, and into the bedroom itself. “It’s big.”

“Yeah.” I followed behind her and tried to imagine what she was thinking. “Is it bad? It’s bad, isn’t it?”

“The space? No. Your decor?” She waggled a hand from side to side. “But I can help with that. You really don’t mind?”

I got lost, just for a moment, in her hopeful gaze. I swallowed. “I really don’t. But keep in mind I’m not trying to get on any lifestyle TV shows. I want comfortable.”

“C’mon, Cody. You know me.”

“I do.”

“So don’t worry.” She came to stand beside me and rested her hand on my arm. “Let’s go see the basement. And then I want to look at the kitchen again, because that’s a masterpiece that doesn’t need any help.”

I laughed. “Glad I did something right.”

“Did you do any of it?”

Busted. I shrugged. “I knew enough to leave it alone. Doesn’t that count for anything?”

“I guess.” She winked at me and started toward the stairs.

On the main floor, I noticed that Austin and Kayla had arrived and were hanging with Noah on the sectional. “Hey, guys. Just giving Megan the tour.”

Kayla popped up. “I missed it. Do you mind if I go poke around?”

“Help yourself.”

Kayla grinned and took off up the stairs. I looked at Austin. “Are Wes and Tristan coming?”

“Far as I know. Scott and Whitney aren’t going to make it. Beckett’s throwing up.” Austin frowned. “I hope it’s nothing contagious.”

No kidding. Beckett had sat with us at lunch after church today. And while a kid might bounce back from the stomach flu fast, I never seemed to. Megan had disappeared to the basement. I wanted to go after her, but it wasn’t like she needed me in order to look around.

The doorbell rang and then the front door opened. “Hey.”
