The woman at the desk glanced at her book, and then stood. “Follow me. Jerica is going to be the consultant working with you today. I’ll get you set up and then let her know you’re here.”

Megan jabbed me in the ribs with her elbow.

I laughed.

Whitney broke off from the group and stopped in front of a gauzy, navy-blue dress that hit just below the mannequin’s knees. “Have you thought about bridesmaid dresses at all? Because this is gorgeous.”

I went back to where Whitney stood and reached out to feel the fabric. It was silky and soft. The drape was good as well and the style would flatter both Megan and Whitney. “I hadn’t. But you’re right. This is perfect. Megan—” I turned and waved her over. “—do you like this?”

“Yeah. That’s fabulous. What are your colors?” Megan reached out to stroke the skirt of the dress.

“July first, right? So I was thinking blue and white. I don’t want too much red, but I’ll throw a little in. Just not over the top Americana, you know? So this would work. Do they have your sizes?” I grinned. That was a big checkmark on my list that I hadn’t even dared to hope we’d get to today. Megan’s and Whitney’s tastes weren’t exactly the most similar things in the world.

“Here’s me.” Whitney pulled a dress off the rack.

Megan flipped a few more hangers out of the way before taking off a dress. “This should work for me.”

The woman from the desk stood watching us with an amused, if impatient, smile.

“Sorry.”

She waved it off. “Don’t be. We just got that in this week. I’m sure it’s going to be a big hit. It’s eye-catching and, despite the fact that everyone says it and very few mean it, I really do think it could be worn again.”

I laughed. I had four bridesmaid dresses that had been touted as rewearable. I’d yet to find an occasion that they fit. But I agreed that these navy dresses would work for a nice night out.

“Why don’t you ladies try those on while I get Jerica. I believe when you made the appointment you said simple and A-line.”

I nodded.

“Jerica should have already pulled a few options that fit. She’ll be right out.”

The woman left, tugging the curtain that separated the large-ish dressing area from the rest of the store and the other try on sections.

I pointed to the smaller changing area. “Go try them on. I don’t care who goes first, but let’s be sure you like it on your body, not just the hanger.”

“Me, first.” Whitney grinned and hurried into the little area.

“You really like it?” I glanced at Megan, who was holding the dress out at arm’s length. “I don’t mind if we need to look for something else. Honestly, even if it’s a different style but the same color, I’m fine.”

“I love this. I don’t know if it’ll look as good on me as it’s going to on Whitney, but that’s okay. We’ll give it a whirl.” Megan flashed a grin.

Whitney came back out and did a little spin. “What do you think?”

“I love it. It’s like it was made for you. Is it comfortable?” I walked around Whitney, taking it in from every angle.

“Very. Go try yours on, Megan.” Whitney made a shooing motion.

Megan scoffed but disappeared into the changing space. It didn’t take her long to return in the dress.

She was right, it wasn’t as amazing on her as on Whitney, but it was still lovely.

“I like that. A lot. What do you think?” I gestured for Megan to turn.

“Good grief.” Megan spun in a fast circle. “I like it. It’s soft and comfortable. Or as comfortable as a dress is going to be.”

Whitney chuckled, then lifted her eyebrows. “So? It’s up to you, obviously.”

“I love it. If you’re happy, I’m happy.” I shook my head as Megan headed quickly back into the changing room. “I guess she’s also excited to get out of it.”
