“Oh, are you surprised? It was bound to happen. Maybe next time you will learn not to steal someone else’s men,” she sneers. I remain silent, my mind drifting back to those weeks at the beach house. Did they truly mean nothing to Jeffrey? The last remaining fragment of my heart shatters.

“You’ve delivered your message. Now, please leave,” I manage to say with a trembling voice. She scoffs before finally departing. I hastily retreat inside and shut the door. Everything crumbles within me. I don’t know how long I sit there crying before I drag myself to the phone. I need to talk to someone before I lose it. Amidst my tears, I grab my phone and dial Mabel’s number.

“Mabel,” my voice breaks as she answers the call.

“Oh, my goodness, Phebe, what happened?” She asks, alarmed. I can’t hold it together any longer as I break down completely.

“Phebe, take a deep breath. I’m here for you,” she reassures me. Her words offer some solace, but I can’t stop tears.

“Mabel, I love him,” I say while still sobbing.

“Jeffrey?” She asks, seeking confirmation.

“Yes.”

“Oh, dear, what happened?” She asks.

Amidst the sniffles and sobs, I confide in Mabel. The overwhelming love I feel for Jeffrey, and everything that happened from Mildred’s arrival at the beach house to this point. I withhold the news about my pregnancy for the time being.

“It’s all falling apart, Mabel. I love him, but he doesn’t feel the same way. He is engaged to her. It hurts,” I confess through my tears Mabel’s soothing voice reaches my ears as she responds,

“Phebe, listen to me. You’re a strong and beautiful woman. Any man would be lucky to have you, and if Jeffrey d see that, then shame on him. You’ve been through so much before, and you’ll get through this, too.” Her words penetrate my head, but it’s not so easy to fully believe them.

“I don’t think I have the strength, Mabel,” I manage.

“Yes, you do. There is no stronger woman than you, and I greatly respect you. We will pull through this together,” she says.

“Oh, Mabel,” I whisper, overwhelmed with emotion.

“Yes, sweetheart, I’m here for you. Michael is here too. Your aunt and Uncle are also here for you,” she says.

“Oh, Mabel, there is something I haven’t told you,” I disclose.

“What is it?” she inquires.

“I’m pregnant,” I manage to say. Her gasp is audible.

“Oh, my goodness,” she says.

“How did it happen? Oh, I’m sorry. I mean, why didn’t you protect yourself, Phebe?”

“I felt loved Mabel. Please forgive me for letting go of any inhibitions,” I confess.

“I understand, and you know what? It doesn’t matter. I am here for you. Goodness, I can’t believe you will be giving me another goddaughter or godson,” Mabel says, bring a smile to my face.

“I know, right? In just a few months, I’m going to be a mother again,” I tell her.

“Yes, sweetheart, and I’m genuinely happy for you. The circumstances may not be what we envisioned, but I’ll be here for you, okay?” She assures me.

“Okay,” I nod in agreement.

“Now, don’t let anything weigh you down. You need to be strong for yourself and for your baby,” she advises.

“Okay,” I reply.

“Have you told Michael?” She asks.

“No, not yet. I just found out moments ago and honestly dread his reaction,” I admit.
