The air is crackles with tension, laden with unspoken words. I feel her eyes on me as I weigh the option of retreating to my room for dinner, but I’m not ready to take the coward’s way out.

Squaring my shoulders, I take a seat at the table. I sense her eyes on me as I serve my plate.

“You thought you’d won? Well guess what. I’m here to reclaim what belongs to me.”

My heart clenches, and I struggle to maintain a neutral expression.

“What is it that you’re insinuating?”

She raises an eyebrow, her gaze locking onto mine.

“Jeffrey, of course. He’s mine.”

My fingers tremble slightly, and I take a deep breath to regain my composure.

“Jeffrey is his own person, Mildred. Besides, I don’t understand why you’re telling me this,”

I say with a casual shrug. Her laughter grates against my nerves like nails on a chalkboard.

“Oh, I understand that you have no business meddling in our affairs, which means you should leave.”

My heart pounds in my chest, as I struggle to maintain my composure.

“What exactly are you trying to imply?”

She leans in even closer, her voice a low whisper.

“I despise it when anyone tries to snatch what belongs to me. I won’t just sit back and watch.”

My fists clench at my sides, and anger surging through me.

“You have no right to threaten me, Mildred.”

She chuckles softly, her eyes glinting with malice.

“Oh, Phebe, you have no idea what I’m capable of. Jeffrey is mine, and I’ll do anything to have him.”

Gritting my teeth, frustration and anger bubbling up, I want to give her a piece of my mind.

“I don’t care about whatever it is between you and Jeffrey. We only have a working relationship.” It hurts me to say this, but I refuse to let her insults go unanswered.

Mildred’s laughter echoes once again, this time louder and more chilling.

“Work relationship? Darling, do you honestly think I’ll believe that nonsense, especially with your face splashed all over the newspapers? You must be reveling in the spotlight. Well, enjoy the moment. I’m here to take my spot back.”

Before I can respond, the dining room’s entrance door swings open, and Jeffrey walks in. My heart skips a beat at the sight of him, but he appears distant, closed off. I can’t help but notice the tension etched on his face.

Instantly, my gaze locks on Mildred, who wears a fake, overly cheerful smile. She theatrically moves toward Jeffrey and engulfs him in a tight hug. My heart aches as I watch, desperately hoping he’ll break away.

But Jeffrey remains motionless, his arms hanging limply at his sides while Mildred clings to him. My stomach churns, and a dull ache settles in my chest. This is the confirmation I dreaded that they’re still together.

Finally, Mildred releases Jeffrey from her embrace and takes a step back, her smile triumphant. I can’t bear to look at him, feeling the sting of betrayal and heartache wash over me.

“Jeffrey, darling, I missed you so much!” her voice filled with longing.

Jeffrey’s response is distant and measured.

“Mildred,” he acknowledges, his tone lacking warmth.
