I was hoping she’d stay silent. I didn’t want the girl on anyone’s radar except mine. Knowing Josie, the vampire would stalk Alicia to make sure she wasn’t a threat to supernatural society.

“It’s late. I think it’s time I drive Alicia home,” I said.

“Good idea.” Kane waved a hand at the death and dismemberment on the ground. “We’ll take care of this mess.”

“Thank you.” I steered Alicia in the direction of my truck.

“Hey, I have a question,” Alicia said, climbing into the passenger seat. “Why did that monster call you her mistress?”

“It’s just a demon custom,” I said, “like calling someone ma’am.”

“Oh.” Alicia seemed to buy the lie as she settled against the seat.

“Tell me where your bike is, and I’ll throw it in the back of the truck on the way home.”

Alicia’s eyes glimmered with tears. “Is it safe to stop?”

“Yes,” I said. For now.

CHAPTER16

That night I was fairly sure I fell asleep before my head hit the pillow. I awoke the next morning filled with dread. Between Bruce, Solomon, the demon heads, Ariston and Lamashtu, I felt like this new world was crumbling in my hands. Not even a video of a cat with reading glasses could cheer me up. I must’ve looked at the clock on my phone fifty times, wondering whether it was too early to call Kane to ask what he learned about The Corporation. Whatever it was, I hoped it didn’t involve any more death. Not this week at least.

The phone pinged and I jumped. My spirits deflated when I saw Fatima’s name on the screen.

“Good morning, Big Boss.”

“Any update for me? My moat guy has an opening next month. I’d love to get you on his schedule.”

My fingers tightened around the phone. “Almost there.”

“How confident are you? Should I commit?”

As much as I wanted to offer a resounding yes, I couldn’t do it. The situation had become far more complicated than a hermit’s ghost.

“I’ll let you know soon,” I told her and hung up.

When the clock struck twelve, I decided I’d been patient enough and messaged Kane. The demon could sleep all day tomorrow. Today we needed to put the house on Thoreau Street to rest.

“I thought I’d let you rest as long as possible before we take action,” he explained.

Well, that wasn’t ominous or anything.

The demon arrived on my doorstep within the hour. He looked as grim as he did before he left.

“Not good news, I take it?”

He didn’t smile. “You said Solomon was a djinn, right?”

“Yes. Why?”

“According to my sources, the appearance of a djinn at an offshore account signals a potential withdrawal of resources.”

“There’s protocol?” What was I saying? They were called The Corporation. Of course there was protocol to follow.

“Each offshore account’s primary guardian is…”

“A fuzanglong,” I interjected.
