“Niko,” Josie said.

The demon nodded, as though this was the answer he expected. “Has it been reported to Chief Garcia?”

“No. Thought you’d want to keep this one in-house.”

“I think that’s the right decision.”

Josie chewed her lip. “It likely happened in Fairhaven.”

He dragged a hand through his hair. “I’m aware.”

“It could ignite a war if we don’t handle it well,” Josie said.

My curiosity was piqued. “A war? You mean because assassins aren’t allowed to kill inside the town border?”

Kane met my inquisitive gaze. “Correct. And if Diamond was killed in order to claim his place in the guild, then that could start a riot.” He turned to Josie. “We need to know exactly what happened as quickly as possible. Keep the details to yourself for now. I’ll have Niko do the same.”

Josie gave him a mock salute.

“I’m afraid I have bad news of my own,” he continued.

Josie cocked her head, waiting.

“It seems The Corporation is in town.”

The vampire’s eyes widened. “They came to the club?”

“No, Miss Clay had an encounter with one of their representatives. A djinn named Solomon.” He looked at me. “Where was this nonromantic encounter?”

“27 Thoreau Street.”

Josie gave me her full attention. “Did you kill him?”

I couldn’t decide whether she was hoping for a yes or a no. “No. I played human. He seemed to buy it and let me go.”

“What was he doing in a neighborhood house?”

“There’s something in the house that they either want or are trying to keep hidden,” I explained. “I’d like to go back and find out.”

Josie drew back. “You don’t want to mess with The Corporation. They’re on another level.”

“Another level from a prince of hell?” I queried.

“I’ve heard rumblings,” Kane began, then seemed to think better of it.

A memory stirred. “When my friend Matilda visited, she mentioned something…” I clicked my nails on the counter, trying to remember her warning. “She said a great power is rising. I wonder if she meant The Corporation.”

“They’ve been a great power for a long time already. You’ve never heard of them?” Josie appeared incredulous.

“Should I have?”

She snorted. “They’re only the most powerful group of supernaturals in the world.”

“Like the Avengers?”

Josie frowned. “No. This is a real group.”

“But could they beat the Avengers if theywerereal?”
