He knew Raina and Cody stopped over to see Ryder and Marissa wherever they were for the holiday.

“Let me know if they bring up my name,” Trent said.

“Now you’re going to get childish,” Jonah said.

“Sorry, I’m not you. I want to know what is going on so I can stay ahead of it.”

“How long have you been dating?” Megan asked.

He loved the gleam in her eyes. She had to keep his older brother on his toes.

“Two months,” he said quietly.

“Dude,” Jonah said. “I’m hurt you didn’t tell me.”

His brother was smirking. “Cut the shit. You know what it’s like. You’ve been in my shoes and I wanted to tell you in person. I haven’t seen you much. You can’t get your ass to the gym early anymore.”

“Because he spends the mornings with me,” Megan said. “Unless he has a client. That is our time before I go into work.”

He loved how his brother was making it work. He wouldn’t begrudge him that because he got it now.

“And I don’t see you or Cody much,” he said to Raina. “This wasn’t a phone call conversation.”

“You’re right,” Raina said. “Okay, we can end this now because Mom and her big ears could hear something.”

“Thanks,” he said.

A few hours later, he was home and watching the clock. It was seven and he knew that Eli was back and Roni was probably spending time with him so he had the game on and was watching it for now.

When his phone went off, he was shocked to see Roni sending him a text and asking if he could talk.

He replied he could, his phone ringing in his hand.

“Hi,” he said. “What’s going on?”

“Eli is in the tub,” she said. “I’m in the kitchen. I was going to wait until later to call, but I found I’m too worked up.”

“Oh boy,” he said. “What happened?”

“I got to Jeff’s parents’ to drop off Eli and when Joe answered the door, he was shocked I was there.” He listened while she told him everything that happened and then the call from Jeff. “I shouldn’t have said I recorded it, huh? That was wrong of me to lie. What if he wants to hear it? Or he tells his lawyer and now they think I’m recording everything? Or he starts doing it to me.”

“Slow down,” he said. “You did the right thing.”

“Lying about recording the conversation?”

“Well,” he said. “I wouldn’t have advised that to my client, but you did what you did and it’s over. Don’t dwell on it now and I’m sure it’s not a big deal. Do you think Jeff ever recorded you?”

“I’m sure he has,” she said. “There are times he’s thrown words back in my face on me and I know he doesn’t have that good of a memory.”

“Then don’t worry about it. You never say things you shouldn’t. I get the feeling you’re in control all the time.”

“I am,” she said. “My mother even got annoyed that I told Jeff to enjoy his day with Jenna.”

He laughed. “It might just tick him off that he can’t get much of a reaction out of you.”

“I always suspected that. I thought I handled it well, but now I’m sweating it for when I see Jeff in a few days. I don’t want more changes over this. Jax thinks I should contact my attorney and have an amendment, but why would I? Jeff isn’t wrong that it’s his six hours and he can leave Eli with his parents if he wants.”

“You’re right,” he said. “And it’s good that you understand that when many wouldn’t.”
