“I lease a Mercedes. I admit it’s a bit snobby, but it’s not the top of the line and leasing allows me to get something new every three years and not worry about much maintenance other than oil changes. The last place I worked drilled into your head that you have to look the part of success to be that way.”

“So you put a front on for people?” she asked, frowning.

“No,” he said. “I like nice things. From clothes to cars, but I pick and choose what I spend my money on. I live in a modest apartment complex because I just don’t have the time to do the work around a house and I’m not there enough.”

“But you’ve got an office here in a nice new spot,” she said.

“Exactly. Like you spend your time the best way you see fit with your son, I do that with my time and money with my business. Under it all, I think I’m pretty basic when I’m not working.”

“Really?” she asked. “I’m not so sure about that.”

“Then I guess you’re just going to have to find out outside of work then, aren’t you?”

“You walked me right into that,” she said, grinning.

“I believe you walked yourself, but I might have been holding your hand a little.”

All Coming Together

Somehow Roni found herself with Trent the next day going to a Duke football game.

When he’d told her he’d gotten two tickets from a client this week and hadn’t decided on what he was doing with them she hadn’t believed him.

He said it was true. That he got them on Thursday and knew he had a handful of people he could ask and was going to do it on Friday. But he wanted to spend the day with her.

She wanted to say no and found herself saying yes instead. Those walls she’d put up over the years were being knocked down by kindness and charm on a sexy man that got her heart racing.

Trent knocked on her door Saturday. There was no reason to say they’d meet. Why bother driving there and trying to find each other?

“I’m surprised you want to go to the game since you didn’t go to college there,” she said.

He’d told her he’d gone to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She wasn’t that far away at North Carolina State.

“Doesn’t mean I don’t appreciate a good college game,” he said.

He had a Duke shirt on; she did too. “I kind of have to support it,” she said. “The Fierces all have ties at Duke.”

“Exactly,” he said. “The same. And Raina is a student there.”

As soon as those words were out of her mouth, she started to worry that one of the Fierces might be at the game today too.

“Do you think we’ll run into anyone?” she asked.

“There are twenty-five thousand seats at Brooks Field,” he said. “We are going to run into a lot of people.”

“I mean anyone we’ll know,” she said.

“Who knows? That’s the thing about life,” he said. “It’s all a chance. If you’re asking if we’ll run into anyone with the last name of Fierce, I think the chances are slim. I do know that Grant and Garrett have season tickets, but the kids all share them. Four tickets. There is a good chance there are four of them there somewhere, but again, I doubt they are going to be near where I’ve got tickets.”

“Okay,” she said.

“Are you ready to go?” he asked.

“Sure. You’re not going to ask to see my place?”

He grinned at her. “You can show me around if you want.”
