“How long do you plan on working today?” he asked.

“I’m almost done,” she said. “Why?”

“Come celebrate with me,” he said.

“Excuse me?” Her eyes lifted to him.

“I just had a big win. I meanbigwin. I need to celebrate and don’t want to do it alone. Janine is gone. I talked to her earlier. I’m surprised you didn’t hear her screaming. I thought she might blow my eardrum out. I just got back from meeting with my clients to finalize everything and was going to close up. We can order dinner and eat here. No one will see us, don’t worry, if that is what your concern is.”

If it wasn’t for the fact that he was almost bouncing in place over his excitement and that he’d been so sweet with her son a few weeks ago, she’d say no. She hadn’t ventured out spending time with a man in a while and she was rusty. What if she did or said something stupid?

But she had seen a side to him that she hadn’t in most men and she was intrigued. And interested. She also felt that maybe he laughed at himself as much as other people did and if she did do something wrong or silly, he wouldn’t make her feel bad about it.

“Congratulations on the win,” she said cheerfully.

“Thank you. Dinner? Please?” he said. “I don’t want to be the loser that has a shot of liquor alone in their office. That is supposed to be when I have a bad day, not a good one.”

She laughed. He was winning her over easier than she thought possible. “I guess it won’t hurt,” she said.

“Good. What do you want to eat?” he asked. “With as efficient as you are, I bet you’ve got menus and everything else of places that deliver and cater so that you can be prepared if any businesses ask you for a recommendation.”

Roni grinned. She wasn’t surprised he’d figured that out. “I do,” she said. She opened a drawer and pulled out several menus.

“You pick,” he said.

She knew if one of them didn’t they’d be here all day playing this game. “Do you have any food allergies or cuisines you don’t like?”

“Nope, I can and will eat just about anything.”

She flipped them over so she couldn’t see them and then spread them out on her desk, making a bigger production out of it as if she were with Eli. Closing her eyes, she grabbed one at random. “Here you go. Flip it over and tell me what it is.”

He started to laugh at her. “I never expected you to do that. I guess you’re more spontaneous than planned out.”

“I’m more planned than anything else in my life, but since I just agreed to dinner, guess I’m stepping out of the box for the first time in years.”

“Years?” he asked. He looked down at the piece of paper in his hand. “We are having Thai food. Nice and spicy.”

“I’ve eaten there once. It’s good.”

“I guess you aren’t going to explain your ‘years’ comment then, huh?”

“I’ll think about it while we wait for dinner,” she said. She pulled the piece of paper out of his hand, scanned it and then said, “Number thirteen for me.”

“Thirteen is my lucky number.”

“Are you just saying that?” she asked.

“Nope. I wore thirteen when I played basketball. And I’m going to try to find a picture of it to prove it so you don’t think I’m making it up.”

She smirked. “The fact you admitted there is a picture out there means it’s true.”

“But I don’t want you to think I’m giving you a line. I’ll order dinner and see you soon.”

“It should be ready fast. They deliver too,” she said. “I’ll be up in less than thirty minutes.”

“I’ll see you then,” he said.

This would give her time to gather her wits about her and think about why she decided to have dinner with Trent.
