“And everyone thinks Wyatt has the big head?” Ryder asked, laughing and narrowing his eyes at Drake.

Roni looked at the four men in her office. All big men and she was almost claustrophobic over it.

“Is there anything I can help you with today or are you just gathering here before you go up to whatever space you’re checking out?”

“Space on the second floor,” Grant said. “We’ve got someone interested in it, but Drake wants to check it out before we can get back to them to see if we can put in the bathrooms they want. Royce should be there by now too.”

“I’ll let you all get to work then.”

She watched the four men leave and went back to her job. They didn’t pay her to sit around and talk.

Her cell phone went off five minutes later and she looked to see it was Jeff calling her. It was barely noon and she’d be picking Eli up after work. She couldn’t imagine what this was about.

“Hello,” she said, answering, and was just grateful it was after her bosses had left her office.

“I need you to pick Eli up at three,” Jeff said.

“I’m working,” she said. “I get out at four. He’s at daycare anyway, so I don’t understand why I have to be there earlier.”

Over the summer they found a person to watch Eli between Durham and Raleigh so that it was a split distance. It didn’t matter that Jeff drove to Durham daily anyway and this made her go out of her way. She let it go. Again, one of those things that weren’t worth it. Fifteen minutes of her time didn’t make a difference and the daycare let her drop Eli off at seven thirty so she still got to work before eight.

Days she didn’t have Eli, she was in here at seven. Not that she thought her bosses would care one way or another.

“He’s not at daycare,” Jeff said. “He said he had a stomachache this morning and I didn’t want to send him. He thought he was going to throw up and if I sent him they’d make me come get him.”

She wanted to grind her teeth that she was just finding out now, but there was nothing saying she had to know of every little aliment their son had when he was with his other parent.

“Where is he if he’s not at daycare?”

“He’s with my mother, but she just called and said she forgot she has a doctor’s appointment and needs to leave a little after three. I can’t be there by then. I’m in meetings all afternoon that I can’t reschedule.”

She wanted to ask what he would have done if it wasn’t her day to pick Eli up but again, one of those “not worth it” things.

“I’ll be there,” she said. She was sure that her bosses wouldn’t care if she left a little early today.

She got up and locked the door after she hung up with Jeff and sought them out on the second floor. Thankfully Royce hadn’t gotten there yet.

“Roni,” Garrett said, “Did you want to check out the space with us?”

She had keys to every space in the building. “No,” she said. “I’m sorry to bother you. I just got a call that I need to pick Eli up early. Is it possible to leave at two thirty today? I’ll make the time up.”

Grant waved his hand. “Nonsense on making the time up. You’re salary and we know when you don’t have your son you’re here early and stay late.”

She wasn’t aware they knew that. “How do you know?”

“People talk,” Garrett said. “And go take care of what you need to. No worries. If there is an emergency, they will call.”

“And it rolls over to my phone, so I’ll take it anyway.”

She did that because sometimes she was out running errands. But she was also on call after hours if there was anyone there late and an emergency in the building.

“Go spend a few extra hours with your son today,” Grant said.

“Thank you so much,” she said and left.

It was nice to have the flexibility. Something she didn’t have at her last job and just another reason this place was perfect for her.
