“That’s what I love about you,” Janine said. “There is more to this than getting justice for the Wilcoxes. It’s about protecting everyone.”

“It is,” he said. “I don’t like situations like this. It could have been prevented. There was more than one life that was affected by it. Guess we’ll see what happens in the next few weeks.”

He’d love nothing more than to get a fair settlement for the Wilcoxes, which would in turn give him a lot of breathing room with his practice and his life. The stress would be gone and he could focus on expanding his clients with cases that were meaningful to him, not just those that would bring in the money.

Like he’d been forced to do at his last job.

And here, he’d get the whole thirty-three percent. Not the firm getting it and him getting his smaller share of it.

He hadn’t even had a chance to figure out what he’d give Janine for cases.

He’d work that out too. He was getting ahead of himself. The hospital could easily tell him to go pound salt and they’d see him in court. That would add more than the forty hours of manpower he’d put into this already, not to mention Janine’s time. He wouldn’t get a penny until a settlement or win in court was reached.

Just like the wrongful termination suit he’d taken on...yeah, that could be something for the long haul. Which was why he was billing for his time and not going to take a portion of the settlement.

Cases like that rarely paid out big in the end and most times the clients gave up. It sucked, but the labor laws were fickle and employers had more leeway as long as it wasn’t discrimination or retaliation and both were very hard to prove in court.

“It will be nice to be able to celebrate a win so early into your opening, but for now we’ll keep plugging away and getting our billable hours out.”

“That’s right,” he said.

He went back to his office to start to look over the contracts for the company he’d just met with and was going to try to get Roni out of his head.

Weigh The Win

Roni watched Trent walk out of her office and found she was holding her breath.

Dang, he looked good in a suit up close.

She hadn’t seen him since they were in the building on the holiday and both were dressed in shorts.

That was a lie.

She’d seen him walking by her door twice. She wasn’t always in her office or looking up at the door when people walked in and out of the building. She’d be people-watching daily if she did that.

But since he came and went during the day a lot, she’d catch sight of him.

There was something about the way he carried himself in his tailored suits that made her not want to growl over the fact he was an attorney.

She shouldn’t have said what she had or judged him on his profession either, but she just didn’t have the best experiences with lawyers right now.

Though she liked her lawyer and Frank did a good job, he had other clients and more important people than her. It was often down to the wire that she’d get her stuff looked at and usually told it was best to not fight it. At over two hundred dollars an hour, she had to weigh the win to her ego against the hit to her wallet.

Jeff’s ego was always bigger than his wallet and if he couldn’t afford it, she was positive his parents were paying for it. She’d never ask her parents to help her out with those things. They helped enough by letting her live home and spoiling Eli.

The fact she thought Trent was attractive confused her more than the fact she didn’t mind talking to him.

Maybe it had something to do with the conversations she’d had with Janine about Trent.

How he was as a boss and a person.

Could be the fact he was somewhat related to the Fierces. Though that didn’t mean much either other than they spoke highly of Trent.

She went back to work after going up to post a few things in the community room on the bulletin board and make sure the space was neat. She’d heard many were going in there during their lunch hours and that was fine, she supposed, as long as they didn’t leave a mess.

She made a note to talk to maintenance to go in there a few times a day.
