Listening to Janine talk, she felt like Trent was similar to Jax. That was something he would do.

He’d try to make a change and if he couldn’t then he’d leave and make the change elsewhere. He’d look to right a wrong too.

Seemed like Trent did that by giving a good employee a job and standing up for as many as he could at their last place.

Of course most of that could be gossip, but she felt there was more truth than fiction to it.

“Sounds like things are working out great for you. I’m so glad you found this job.”

“Me too,” she said. “I’m so happy here. I’m making great money and feel like I can make it on my own more. It was time to move on.”

“You were more than welcome to stay as long as you wanted,” her mother said.

“I know. But I do need to be on my own.”

“Maybe you’ll find someone to spend some time with then,” her mother said. “You’ve got to be bored and lonely there.”

Roni sighed. “I’m busy,” she said. “I’ve got lots to do.”

The last thing she needed was her mother pushing her again to find someone else. She’d find someone when she was ready.

Feel Her Out

“Hi, Roni,” Trent said at the end of July. He’d just gotten out of a meeting on the first floor with one of the businesses and was walking back to his office when Roni was coming down the stairs and they’d crossed paths by her door.

“Hello, Trent. How are you doing?”

“Wonderful,” he said, grinning at her. He hadn’t seen her again since July Fourth. “How about you?”

He’d seen the light on in her office when he came in this morning. He didn’t know her hours. It seemed to him sometimes she was here before he got here around seven; other days, her light was off when he came in. Most times she was gone when he left.

Half the building probably was.

He was pulling ten to twelve hour days here or going home and finishing up work there.

“I’m doing well,” she said.

She turned to go to her office and he decided to follow her in. He wanted to talk to her anyway and didn’t want to be doing it out in the hallway of the entrance where anyone could walk in and hear the conversation.

Not that he had any idea of what he was going to say exactly, but he wanted to feel her out some.

“Do you have a few minutes?” he asked when she turned and noticed him behind her. He had to pull his eyes from her ass. Damn, she had a body on her.

She was on the small side and was wearing a pair of light pink pants that fit her well and stopped at her calves. She had a pair of floral flats on her feet and a white summer sweater. She looked young and fresh to him. Innocent, like he’d thought before but knew he was probably just seeing something that wasn’t there.

“Of course,” she said. “Is everything okay in your office?”

“It is,” he said. “But I wanted to thank you.”

She angled her head at him, a slight frown going across her eyebrows. “For what?”

“For all the business you seem to be generating. I just left a meeting with another one. They saw my name in the newsletter and gave me a call. The owners did. It’s nice to get some businesses as clients too.”

The marketing firm had reached out to him last week. They did a lot of radio ads and billboards. He’d have to remember that too. He should have used this firm when he put his billboard up and would next time.

They needed legal counsel on hand to look over contracts as changes were made. Most were a standard one, but they hadn’t been revised in years. It wouldn’t be a ton of work, but he didn’t care. The more he got his name out there, the better it was.
