“It’s great,” he said. “Getting there.”

“But not as fast as you want it to be?” his mother asked.

She always knew what he was thinking or feeling. “It will get there at the pace it should go,” he said.

“I understand. It’s just good that Eli is aware now.”

“That was my thought.” And if Eli wasn’t the one that pushed it, he didn’t know where they’d be.

“Did you get Roni something nice for the holiday?” his mother asked. “Maybe something sparkly?”

“For our first date?” he asked. “That’s a little overkill, don’t you think? I might scare her away.”

His mother laughed. “Fine. I get it. I’ll let it go.”

“Thank you, Mom.” He hung up after that. He had a small gift bag that he took out of his briefcase and had hidden so that Janine didn’t see it.

Of course he got Roni a gift and it did sparkle. Not as much as he wanted, but he wasn’t stupid enough to go nuts either.

She wore the necklace that he’d given her for Christmas daily. He got her little white gold hoops with small diamonds on them. He knew she’d throw a fit, but he didn’t care.

As he’d been saying enough, things were going well.

He loved her.

She loved him.

He wanted to spoil her because in his mind no one had ever done it before and if anyone deserved it, it was her.

His phone went off with a text that Roni was on her way up, so he went to unlock the door and wait for her.

“Hi,” he said. “Thai food.”

“I hope you don’t think it’s corny, but our first date was in your office when we celebrated your win. I got the same food.”

He laughed at her. “It’s funny we were thinking the same way.”

She frowned. “How is that?”

“I know Diane and Carolyn visited you. My mother just called.”

“Which means they called her?” she asked.

“She spoke with Diane and Janine today.”

“I’m not sure I like everyone knowing our business,” she said.

“No one needs to know anything,” he said. “And I didn’t say much. But my mother did ask if I got you something sparkly and I told her it was our first date in Eli’s eyes. It might come off as pushy.”

“Very funny,” she said. “Your gift is at my house if you don’t mind going there later.”

“I’ve got clothes in the car,” he said. He planned for either situation but normally went to her house when Eli wasn’t around. They didn’t stay at his apartment much.

“Good,” she said.

He locked the door and shut the lights in the main area, then went to his office. “We can eat in here rather than in the conference room this time,” he said. “Unless you need to recreate that date?”

“This is fine,” she said. “It’s more comfortable.”
