“Do you know why?” Grant asked.

“Sorry,” Royce said. “I know you asked my father, but I’m not playing along. Whether I know or not, I’m not saying. Have fun with that one.”

Garrett knew enough to let this drop. They not only made progress today but also checked one off their list.

His wife and Diane were called away and he and Grant went to greet some more people but stopped before they reached them. “At least we can focus on Elise and Gabe tonight,” he said.

“No,” Grant said. “Too many people. We can talk and take notes and figure that one out later. No way we are getting anywhere tonight. I’ll tell our wives to keep their eyes open, but that is about it at this point.”

“Well,” he said. “Remember, Royce and Chloe got their start at this party too. Raina and Cody. There could be something about it that helps us along.”

“You tell yourself that,” Grant said. “But tonight, I’m just going to relax because tomorrow we get to see more of our good work when Flynn and Julia tie the knot.”

“You’ve got a point there,” Garrett said. Then they moved off to talk to more people, while his eyes searched out Gabe.

A Good Sport

“That was fun,” Trent said to Roni when he pulled into the parking spot in front of her apartment.

“It was,” she said. “More than I thought it’d be. Thanks for being a good sport and staying that long.”

“As my family said so many times tonight—you too—I like to talk. I met a lot of people and maybe they will remember my name if they need an attorney in the future.”

That wasn’t the reason he wanted to go to the party. Never that. It was more that he was glad to finally have it out in the open that he was dating Roni.

“If they don’t remember how smooth of a talker you were, they might remember your good looks. That is what drew me to you first.”

“Really?” he asked. “You never said that.”

She pulled her keys out and unlocked her door. “You never asked. But be honest. Isn’t that what most people notice first? Then you decide if you want to get to know them more.”

“You’re right,” he said. “I noticed you right away. Petite, quiet, but nice. Your eyes looked into mine and I felt something knock in my chest.”

“Oh, really?” she asked.

He’d held the words in long enough. There was no reason he couldn’t say what he wanted at this point.

“Really,” he said. They were just inside her front door now. The light was flipped on, but it was only for a small lamp by the couch. “My heart was racing. I think my palms got a tad bit sweaty. My face might have even flushed.”

“Now you’re being silly,” she said.

“I don’t know about that,” he said. “I think it happened. Like I was knocked blind and deaf. Or maybe that was after our first time together in bed.”

“That I believe,” she said, giggling. “I felt the same way after.”

He leaned down and kissed her on the lips. Just a soft one. “Only that time? No other time?”

She leaned back and looked into his eyes. He could see the uncertainty. Maybe even the uneasiness.

This wasn’t what he wanted and maybe he was making a mistake saying this now.

But he couldn’t keep it in any longer either.

“I’ve felt it more,” she said. “It seems I do often.”

“Me too,” he said. “What do you think it is?”
