Grabbing the boy’s arm, I lug him outside with me. “I need you to call your father. Tell him it’s an emergency and get him to Mercy West. Tell him it could be life or death.” He swallows as his face pales, but he does what I ask. “She’ll be fine,” I promise him, hoping I’m speaking the truth.

Following the ambulance to the hospital, Cain remains silent beside me. My little brother doesn’t often put voice to his fears, so when he says, “You think she was going to do it again?” I understand he’s worried she might succeed if given the chance.

“I don’t.” And that’s true. There was a glint in her eye when I caught her attention. She had a plan, and as long as Jason’s father works with us, I think it might work.

Chapter Four

CAIN

The school’s misdirection in telling her parents where she was transported to, helped Jason’s father, Judge Thorne, and he was able to work his magic, and now they’ve been banned from seeing her. He’s signing the paperwork for a restraining order as well. Surprisingly enough, they refuse to leave. It could have more to do with the press camped out in front of the hospital—something I’d swear they orchestrated.

“Do you think she’ll change her name?” I ask Abel absently as we sit waiting while she’s evaluated.

“I have no idea.” He sounds as tortured as I feel.

Lamb asking for this psych evaluation could mean a million things, and due to her past, we worry. I worry. I fear she realized that her parents understood they were losing control of her, and this was her only option aside from taking her own life.

“You!” Ester points and hisses at us as she approaches. It’s the first time either of the Roses has been on the psych floor.

“Us.” I stand, waiting for her accusations to fly.

“How could you allow her to attempt to kill herself again?” She doesn’t know yet, then. “We pay you two to watch her every moment of the day. Where the hell were you? Do you have any idea what the press is saying about us? Judging us for being bad parents!” What a fucking mother.

Abel is the one to answer her barrage of nonsense. “Perhaps if you didn’t name her after a gender, paid just a little bit of attention to her, and didn’t treat her like a fucking accessory, we wouldn’t be here.”

The woman’s jaw drops and flops around like a fish out of water. Jefferson shakes his head, a storm brewing in his eyes. “You think we can’t ruin you, boy? One phone call and you’ll never have employment again.”

“She had plenty of attention!” Ester finds her voice.

“From nannies, maybe. Her previous suicide attempt was a cry for help, and the two of you ignored her from the moment you called 911. I’m honestly surprised you even did that much for her,” Abel seethes. “You paid us to watch her, and we’ve been doing that. We’ve seen how neglected she is, how much she craves your attention. How deeply she hurts. But you two are so self-absorbed, you don’t see a fucking thing.” This dressing down changes nothing in either of them.

Jefferson is filled with righteous indignation.

Ester is annoyed at being called out, but she still doesn’t fucking care.

They should never have been parents.

“After we take her away from here, you’ll never see her again,” I spit out, turning and walking away. I can’t be near them anymore. They’ve done this to her, and they don’t have a caring bone in either of their bodies. She’s nothing but a commodity to them—one they plan to offload to the highest bidder.

Leaning against the wall by the doors they wheeled little lamb through, I close my eyes and picture the future. One where she’s happy and loved. Taken care of. Where she can laugh and smile and be free of the pain of her past. I don’t understand how we got hooked on a girl nearly half our age, but we did, and the thought of letting her go now that we’ve found her is a terrifying prospect.

Growing up, Abel and I were always close. We dated a bit in our teens, but it wasn’t until we were adults, and a woman we were both interested in, asked if we’d take her together that we even realized polyamory was an option. After serving with Axel Maxwell in the Army and later meeting his parents, Nate, Ty, and Keeley, we realized this was what we wanted. The love that the trio had for each other over all these years, fighting through obstacles and coming out stronger, it was a bit of an inspiration and cemented our decision to share a woman.

There are so many reasons beyond the physical to partake in this type of relationship, her safety and well-being among the most significant. Because no matter if something happens to one of us, the other will ensure she’s always taken care of. Always loved. She won’t be alone in this ruthless world and expected to fend for herself. One of us will always be here.

Watching as my brother continues to argue with the Roses, attempting to get them to understand why their daughter is so fragile, is only another reason sharing her is so important. I’d have walked away already. I wouldn’t stay there trying to salvage a relationship between the couple and their only child. They don’t deserve her, as far as I’m concerned, and they never will.

No one will ever be good enough for our little lamb. Not even us. But we’ll, at least, spend the rest of our lives working to be. We’ll love her. Take care of her. Put her wants and needs above our own.

I can only hope that she wants us, too.

GIRL

This isn’t like the last time. Sure, they asked questions, a whole slew of them, but they weren’t as intense. Maybe it’s because I asked for help this time, or perhaps it’s because my counselor was on my side and explained what was happening after I told her everything. I begged for help. For freedom, and the shock on her face said to me, that’s never happened before.

I’m not in restraints, my room feels less like a jail cell, and the door has been left open. I’m hoping they’ll allow Cain and Abel to visit. I know they followed me here, but I had to get through the exam first before asking to see them.

Testing out my newfound freedom, I stand up, slide my feet into the plain slippers I was offered, and slowly make my way to my open door. The ward is still locked, but I can leave my room. Spotting one of the nurses I’ve spent time with, at the admission desk, I walk towards her.
