I trusted him.

I think he trusted me.

After all, I had killed his father and all his father’s most loyal Commanders for him. Well, really, for Earth, but I had done it in a way that secured Braxl’s succession. I was sure that things would become much better for Krafina, humans, and the Prexis Empire. Braxl was the superior leader that we all deserved.

And it was because, against all odds, we had fallen for each other.

Was it our sparring in the ring? Had it started at the auction when I had caught Braxl’s eye with my spirit? Was it how beautifully our bodies meshed together in the hours we spent love-making in our quarters?

I just felt grateful. I didn’t know what else I could feel. Triumphant, relieved, motivated…loved…

Braxl was healing well from the wound from his father’s blade. Pledges of loyalty were coming in regularly from the Krafina Commanders who remained or those who stepped up into Commands on the motherships that I hadn’t blown up. There were a few feathers ruffled in some of the remaining Old Guard and those who had been loyal to them, but not loyal enough to be invited to the actual wedding ceremony. It was easy for Braxl to convince them.

I could watch his outgoing messages over and over. He was brimming with pride and flush with integrity. He had a vision for the future of their empire that was easy to believe in.

We decided to keep my role in the Resistance and the explosion of the shuttles secret. Those who knew would never undermine their leader. It all looked like Braxl’s cunning plan to overthrow a regime that no longer fit the needs of all its citizens.

The Krafina responded to strength and respected those who could maintain it, against all odds.

It was better that I become the adored wife of the beloved Highest Supreme Entity. Racism would be enough for me to fight against in my new world without adding the label of untrustworthy traitor.

There still needed to be the ceremonial funeral for Kressel, befitting a leader such as he was. But it would be overshadowed, rightfully, by the coronation of Braxl and the wedding bliss we were living in.

I was excited to attend the games. Braxl would surely excel at any he entered and I didn’t mind finding new ways to be attracted to his magnificence. In the same way that he marveled at how I could surprise him, I loved how he kept surprising me.

The door to our adjoined quarters whooshed open, and I spun in the seat to smile at my husband.

“Hey there, hotness,” I said and beckoned him to me. I stood up and slid into his embrace, pressing my cheek against his chest and reveling in the intensity of the grip of his hands on my back.

“You about ready to go down to the surface?”

I nodded. I looked up at him and he bent to nip my lips with a kiss.

“Are you going to show me all the places you used to run around as a kid? All the secret hideouts and play areas where little Braxl learned how to become the leader he is now?” I stood on my tippy toes to kiss him again.

Our lips sank into each other as the ultimate distraction, the sweetness and tenderness something we could share just as easily as the heat and the passion.

Finally, we broke apart, but he held my hands and twirled me out from him to look me up and down, lust gleaming in his eyes and a smile playing on his lips that made me know that I was truly his.

And he was mine.

“You know it, my love. I will show you everything.”

I winked at him. “Good. That’s all I am asking for, after all.”

“Oh, that’s it, huh?” He spun me back into him and pinched my ass, so I shrieked in delight.

“Everything, Highest Supreme Entity. That’s what I want from you.”

He laughed and held me tight. “I’ll gladly give it to you.”

We swayed in the center of our quarters, just enjoying being in each other’s arms.

A chime alerted from the terminal I had been sitting at, and my eyes drifted over to it. My heart skipped, and I took a deep breath. There was a response from the Resistance already. Surely, it was a secondary check to make sure that I was who I said I was. Once I had confirmed that, there would be more discussions to follow.

After all, they hadn’t expected to hear from me directly. I had been dedicated to dying on this mission.

I squeezed Braxl tightly, enveloping myself in the relief of my new world.
