“You’ve heard of him?”

She rolled her eyes. “Who hasn’t? My father always spoke very highly of your brother, said he was alpha material, even when he was still coming into his wolf.”

There was something wistful to her tone.

“Made you jealous, huh?” I broadened my smile. “Me, too. Couldn’t ever catch up to him. So, I made my own path.”

“Yeah, well, so did I.” She’d lost the hostility, and her voice had a husky way that soothed the wildness in me. I’d love to hear my name on her lips. I’d kill to hear her moan. I’d die if she came around my cock. “If you’re here to mess with Sal, I’m going to enjoy the show.”

“Is that why you’re here?” I leaned toward her. “To mess with your alpha?”

She shuttered her eyes, and I cursed myself for pushing. Such a fine line—and I’d just trampled over it.

“He’s not my alpha,” she said as she shifted her gaze away again. “I’m here to get what I’m owed.”

“I’m not sure you’ll get what you’re after. In fact, I think you’ll get exactly what you haven’t bargained for. Men like Sal can’t be trusted.” I tried to catch her eye again, but she was glued to the scenery. “Take my offer. Den mother…one year. We can go straight to my compound instead of going to face your stepbrother. Trust me. This is the move you want to make.”

“What do you know about it?” She shook her head. “You assholes are all the same, throwing your weight around, along with your opinions. I’m not going anywhere with you. Nothing happens unless it’s on my terms. That’s the way it is and will always be.”

I sighed, defeated by her stubbornness.

I’d tried. It wasn’t like I could force her. But damn it, she wasn’t going to like how her day ended.

I should tell her, give her a heads-up, risk the wrath of Sal and his clan, potentially start a war between our packs. No, definitely start a war. Kane would kill me. Our wolves weren’t ready for that kind of fight. Not yet.

I wanted to give her a choice.

Fuck. Why did I always find myself in impossible situations?

Because you put yourself there, dumbass.

I opened my mouth to try one more time when the car stopped. I looked up to see the towering skyscraper of Larsen Corp rising above the rest of the buildings. Charlie didn’t wait for the driver to open the door. She bounced, and I was left staring at her glorious ass as she strode away.

Time had run out, and I had failed in my personal mission.

Charlie would have to face her destiny, even if it wasn’t the one she imagined would come to be.
