“And he wants me dead?” Cammie eased her hold against Ben’s chest.

“He said there was no other way.” Ben hiccupped through his tears. “He said he was going to take care of Mr. Roberts himself.”

“Where is he now?” Cammie jumped up. “Where is Elm now?” If Zane were in trouble, she had to help him.

“I don’t know!” Ben cried. “The last time I saw him he was on his way to meet with Chief Ross.”

“Is the chief in on this too?” Cammie was already at the freezer door.

“No! He’s interviewing everyone who was around you in the Burlesque Room, trying to figure out who drugged you.” Ben shifted so he was sitting up. “I’m sorry, Cammie. I’m so sorry! I don’t think Elm has killed Mr. Roberts yet.”

Yet.

A word that didn’t inspire confidence. “How do you know?”

“When I came back to your room with food and realized you were missing, I panicked and called Sherri. She’s working an event all afternoon and told me to find Elm.” Ben sucked in a few breaths. “He didn’t let me explain what had happened. He just said that he needed me to babysit Zane, but he couldn’t tell me where Mr. Roberts was because security had found him right then and asked had him to come for his interview.”

Fuck!

She needed to find Zane, and she needed help to do it. The last time she’d tried to get the Security Chief to believe her story, she didn’t have proof. Cammie stormed to Ben and he cried out, cowering as she approached. She took his hand and twisted it behind his back, using pain as incentive to get Ben up.

“Ouch! Please don’t break my arm!” Ben might have had several feet on Cammie but size really didn’t matter when the right pressure was applied. “Where are we going?”

She marched him to the door.

“We’re going to solve a murder and save the hero and, this time, everyone’s going to believe me.”
