“I shouldbring him over.”

“No. I don’thave the time to take care of him.” A sob escaped her. “Ihave no idea how I’m going to tell Jason. They’ve beenwanting to have children for years, and now- just one time and I’mknocked up by a man who doesn’t give a damn.”

“You’renot going to worry about that now.” He told her firmly. “Let’sget you into the living room and get some warm tea inside you.”

Chapter 9

“I found someslightly moldy biscuits in the tin. You should go grocery shopping.”He had a tray laid out with a pot of tea and biscuits on a saucer.

“I should.”She watched as he brought the tray over and placed it carefully onthe table in front of her. “I should have tried harder to fallin love with you.” She offered with a tremulous smile.

“You shouldhave. I’m quite a catch.” He said lightly, sitting acrossfrom her. “Drink up.”

“Perhaps thatwas the main reason why it never happened between us.” Takingup the cup, she took a tentative sip and made a face.

“What?”

“Yourbossiness.”

“My sex appealand my looks should have overridden that.” His grin was weak.“How’s the stomach?”

“Give me aminute or two.” She sighed woefully. “The good news isI’m financially solvent, and this is a very big house.”She looked around the neat and tidy living room with its throwpillows and colorful rugs. “I can do this. A lot of women haveraised children on their own.”

“You’renot alone.” He reminded her brusquely. “I hate to pointthis out, honey, but the guy who knocked you up is a frickingmulti-billionaire. You’re carrying his heir. He isn’tgoing to sit by and not be involved no matter how much of an assholehe is.”

Her hands trembledslightly as she placed the cup back Into the saucer. She'd beenwrestling with that since she suspected what was happening. “Hemight not care.” She murmured half-heartedly.

“He will. Menlike that, with all their resources, automatically want an heir.”He watched her closely.

“Maybe he won’tcome back.”

His eyebrows lifted.“You don’t believe that.”

“No.”Picking up a biscuit, she examined it before putting it back.,dusting off her fingers. “I want to hate him.”

“Youdon’t?”

“I don’tknow how to feel, how to sort out what I’m feeling. I’vealways been so careful and sensible, and now, I –“ Takingup the cup, she took a long gulp and ended up burning her tongue.

“Careful.”Reaching over, Caleb took the cup from her. “That bastardpursued you, and after he got what he wanted, he turned tail and ran. It’s on him.”

“I’mnot some mindless bimbo. I’m an intelligent woman and shouldhave told him to go to hell.” She pressed her lips together andsank back against the cushions. “I didn’t, and now I havethis complicated situation.

I had it all plannedout. I’d meet the right man; we’d date for six months toa year to get to know each other, and then we’d have a quietceremony in a church. After two years, we‘d have children.”

“Plans change.”His blue eyes twinkled in amusement. “You really had all thatplanned out? Did you write it down?”

“Yes,”She rolled her eyes as he laughed. “I have this wedding book.”

“Oh,sweetheart. Only you.” His expression sobered. “It mightstill work out.”

“You don’tbelieve that.”

He shrugged. “Theguy was clearly into you.”

“True, but nowI’m pregnant. He’s going to think I set out to traphim.”

His eyes glittered.“Let those words come out of his mouth and watch me shove themdown his throat. He went after you.”
