His heat transmitted into her at the contact, and something else flickered to life as well. She scooted to the wall and squeezed her own legs together, but she was still touching his.

The pull of need in her core went from an imperceptible shiver to a hum.

No, no, no…

To her relief, the man in black slid into the seats opposite them, providing something else for her to focus on.

In spite of the silver hair that gave away his age, the man in black was handsome. His careworn face was a pale green, and a pair of curved horns crowned his head. His clothing was rich black, well-made, and neat.

He nodded to her, and she nodded back.

Rafe shifted restlessly in his seat, jostling her elbow, which woke the baby.

Little Gus opened his eyes and let out an unhappy noise before spitting up directly into her left hand.

She peeled off the glove without thinking.

Everything after that seemed to go in slow motion.

The man in black noticed the tattoo on the inside of her left wrist and leaned forward as if to examine it.

His eyebrows lifted, and then his eyes flashed to hers.

Horror gripped her like a fist.

He knows.

She couldn’t breathe.

The man in black grabbed her wrist in a motion faster than she would have expected him to be capable of.

“Cover yourself,” he hissed.

There was an explosion of movement beside her as Rafe sprung to his feet.

“Get your hands off her,” Rafe roared. “If you don’t like what she’s wearing, then don’t look at her, you degenerate.”

Rafe didn’t see it. He thinks the man is talking about the silly gown.

When the man in black released her wrist, she pulled it in quickly and shifted the baby to cover the tattoo.

“I know what she is, and—” the man whispered to Rafe.

Before the man could elaborate, Rafe lifted him up by his lapels and held him out in the aisle of the train, his feet dangling helplessly over the faded carpet.

It was like the full-grown man weighed no more than baby Gus. Jade couldn’t imagine the strength it took to hold him like that. And the dragon warrior made it look effortless.

“If you put a hand on her again, I will cut it off and feed it to you,” Rafe said in a loud, clear tone.

There were gasps throughout the car.

Jade stared at the sight of the massive blue warrior, still holding the horned man like he was a rag doll. His voice was calm, but the expression on Rafe’s face was so fierce, it was terrifying.

She was no damsel in distress. But she had also never had anyone stand up for her like this before. There was something gratifying about it. Though the way his muscles were quivering with rage was a little scary.

The whole train car had gone silent with anticipation.

“Do you understand?” Rafe bit out.
