Capricorn lifted one eyebrow. “Do you like seeing women enjoying anything else?”

She was one breath away from being taken on this table…

A gagging noise from across the table spoiled the mood. “Okay, please let me leave before either of you say another word. I would rather keep my delicious dinner down rather than vomit at your obvious flirtation,” Bo interjected.

A growl escaped me before I could contain myself. I had half a mind to launch myself at the obnoxious woman when Capricorn giggled.

“Please don’t vomit. You can leave. Don’t worry about me.”

Bo shifted in her seat so she could peer into Capricorn’s eyes. “I don’t know how you do it, but you’re sober.”

“And I’m also an adult,” she said. It was an odd phrase, but Bo seemed to understand. There was another unspoken moment between the two that ended with Bo’s retreat.

“Well, at least Tia and her crew will be here in case you need her help.” Bo stood, and a wicked smile slashed across her face as she left. “Thanks for dinner, Tharraka.”

“Don’t worry about paying, Tia doesn’t let us pay most of the time,” Capricorn said, as if payment was any concern for me.

The goddess surely imbued Capricorn with her finest aspects. Her smile could disarm the most hardened of warriors. “Paying for her food is a small price to pay for a moment of your time.”

“You don’t have to do that anymore,” she said, her mood shifting somewhat.

I studied her features, taking in her posture. She still seemed relaxed, so that was a good thing. But there was a wariness that had not been there moments ago.

I would not lose her. “Do what?”

“This,” she said, waving her hand in the air. “The vibe. The act. You don’t have to play this up. It’s fine. You can just be yourself.”

What new game is this now? “What act?”

“You know, this whole ‘I’m so into you’ routine. You don’t have to do this. Just tell me what you want, and I can tell you if I can do it or not.”

I looked to Rothgar and Jalen, who shrugged. Well, Jalen shrugged. Rothgar was a little too focused on Capricorn’s every movement, licking his lips as she spoke.

I tried a different approach. “What is it you think I’m doing?”

She shrugged her shoulders, a slight movement that told me nothing. “I haven’t decided yet. Nothing too crazy, or else Bo would never have introduced you to me. However, I am stuck on one tiny detail.”

Her mind was fluid and quick. Just as I thought I was getting closer to her, she spoke in more riddles. “Detail?”

“Yeah, and the rest of the night kinda hinges on it.”

Goddess, I had to be careful of my answer then. “Whatever it is, let me explain for you.”

“Why did you slip something into my drink?”

I went still as stone. There should not have been any way for her to know that I put the dhara in her drink.

Her eyebrow quirked upward. “I know you put something in my drink, so don’t bother denying it. I might not be part of your magical community, but I know when someone’s being all sneaky.”

She leaned an elbow against the table, the sheet of her hair tumbling down her back. How lovely it would feel wrapped around my fist. “Besides, I know every single drink that Tia serves, and what you gave me wasn’t on the menu. I didn’t want to ask in front of Bo because she likes to overreact, and I trust Tia not to harm her clientele, which is why I waited until now to bring it up.”

For one moment, I considered redirecting the line of questioning. It wouldn’t have been lying, we couldn’t exactly lie anyway, but I did not want to mislead Capri. That would be dishonorable. “I did not intend to be sneaky, truly. I merely wanted to share a traditional orc brew with a lady I found attractive.”

“A traditional orc brew, huh?” she said. “And the standard ale was not good enough for you?”

“Ale wouldn’t have told me if we would be…compatible,” I said delicately.

She took a long swallow of her drink. “Compatible. Compatible for what?”
