“If it is, then I don’t want it to end,” he finished.

I gave a nod, staring into those eyes as he shifted his wings and leaned down to kiss me. Warm lips caressed mine before he straightened. “Your clothes are still damp, I’m afraid.”

I glanced at my jeans, t-shirt and underwear draped over a vine at the edge of the cavern. Reality hit me hard. “Michael.”

“No one has come.”

“But they will, won’t they?” I didn’t need him to answer because I already knew the truth.

They’d come with their helicopters and their guns.

They wouldn’t stop, not until they found us.

I moved fast, hurrying over to my clothes and pulled them on. “We have to find a way out of here. Get a truck and keep on driving, put as much distance between us.” I tugged up my jeans, then yanked down my shirt before turning, finding his face still covered. “But first, we need to get you some sunglasses. Dark as hell sunglasses. Do you think you can manage if I find you some of those?”

“I do not know what they are, but I’ll try anything.”

“Can you get us out of here? Out of the forest to where there are others like me.”

“Mortals?”

I nodded.

He scowled, then turned his head as the clouds grew darker, plunging the cavern back into darkness. There was something wrong. Something he wasn’t telling me. I moved closer and placed my hand on his arm. “What is it?”

“If I tell you something, do you promise not to…what’s the word?”

“Freak out?” I offered.

He nodded and turned his gaze to mine. “Yes. Freak out.”

“I promise.”

“Last night, when I dropped from my world and into yours, I was following someone…several someone’s actually.”

My pulse boomed and the cavern walls suddenly closed in. “Go on.”

“There are four of us.”

“Four?”

He gave a slow nod.

I took a step backwards. My mind racing. “Four of…you?”

“Yes. Four of my kind.”

I shifted my gaze to the forest that spread out far below. “Out there?”

He gave a shrug. “Honestly, I don’t know. If they are, then they’ll be confused and blind in this light. They’ll need me.”

Four more like him.

Jesus…

“We have to find them,” I whispered. “We have to keep them safe.”

His breath left in a rush. Shoulders sagged with relief. “Thank you. Thank you for helping me. I was so worried you’d wake this morning and start screaming the moment you saw me.”
