“What do you want to be doing with your life?” I asked, thoroughly invested in her answer.

Would it be too much to hope she dreams of living in the woods?

“No one’s ever really asked me that before.” She smiled up at me, almost shyly. “But if you really want to know… I’ve always wanted to be a career and life coach. I get a thrill out of helping others figure out the path that’s best for them.”

“Because you were never given that opportunity yourself?” I ventured.

She made a strangled noise in her throat before it morphed into a surprised laugh. “Well, shit… yeah, I guess you could say that. The pasta’s ready, by the way. Bring it over so we can chow down on this five star meal.”

I chuckled in amusement as I helped set the small table. “I’ve been told by some of my more humanoid acquaintances that the restaurant scene in Cape Dawn isn’t half bad. Leagues better than Bev’s diner down the road.”

My little flower laughed again, and I drank down the sound like fine wine. “It’s true. I’ve always been impressed by what Maine has to offer. It’s a wonder more people aren’t flocking here.” She grew quiet for a moment. “Would creatures like you even want more people to flock here?”

I thoughtfully considered my answer as she dished out. “We’re not opposed to humans sharing space with us, but they would have to be the types to not grab their pitchforks every time something unusual happened. There’s a reason most humans don’t know about us, as there have been incidents where things ended badly… for our kind…”

And we’ll leave it at that.

Billie apparently didn’t want to let the subject drop, and I noticed an excited gleam in her gorgeous eyes. “What if you had more human support? Like, if the right humans knew about you, and could advocate on your behalf?”

What is she talking about?

Despite my confusion, I didn’t wish to discourage her, so I chose my next words carefully. “While the sentiment is lovely, there probably aren’t many humans who would respond as positively to the supernatural world as you have.”

The gleam turned downright mischievous. “Mmm… I wouldn’t be so sure about that, Oren. I can tell you right now there’s a veritable army of women—and men—who would love nothing more than to be matched with a supernatural creature… or five. Especially if they have fancy accessories…”

Her gaze dropped to my groin area, and I quickly slid into the uncomfortable wooden chair to hide my body’s reaction beneath the table.

That didn’t mean I could resist returning the tease. “Careful, little flower. I’m not sure you could handle my fancy accessory.”

“You’re ‘knot’ sure, hmm?” she murmured, a secretive smile playing on her luscious lips. When I narrowed my eyes, she pointedly changed the subject. “Bon appétit! I hope you enjoy my budget attempt at dinner.”

Not as much as I would enjoy eating you.

Wanting to please her, I obediently sampled the pasta covered in canned vegetable sauce, but it didn’t take long for Billy to notice my lack of enthusiasm as she cleaned her plate.

“This isn’t what you normally eat, is it?” She grimaced apologetically. “I didn’t even think to ask you.”

I reached across the table, overjoyed when she allowed my monstrous paw to cover her tiny hand without flinching. “Considering I prefer my prey to still be warm when I devour it, I wouldn’t expect you to provide what I normally eat.”

For a moment, I worried this information would frighten her, but my concerns were forgotten when I noticed her dilated pupils.

“Maybe you should go hunting then,” she spoke steadily, though her hand trembled under mine. “I would hate for you to go hungry.”

I kept my focus on her face—not wanting to miss a thing and hoping I was correctly interpreting the situation. “Yes, a hunt does sound… enticing. Something to take the edge off.”

Billie simply nodded, her gaze trailing down my body as I rose to stand. My cock was swelling beneath my fur, and I knew if I didn’t immediately leave this cabin, I’d be spreading her open and eating at the table, after all.

But if she’s promising what I think she is, I’d rather prolong my satisfaction.

“You won’t leave, will you?” I paused at the door, suddenly terrified she was planning to sneak back to her car and drive out of my life forever.

“No.” The sight of her pink tongue peeking out to wet her lips sent a jolt of primal need down my spine. “But I might wander outside for a walk in the woods.”

Chapter 5

Billie

My entire body was vibrating with anticipation as I dried the last plate, placed it back on the shelf, and turned to face the empty cabin.
