Chapter 1

Krothu

I lingered over the hot toddy that was served with dessert today. True to Cherry’s word, it paired well with the stroopwaffel, and I delighted in taking a bite. Soft on one side, crispy on the other, it made for a sweet end of the day.

It would make my day even sweeter if I could see the pastry chef that created this confection. However, Plum was busy in the kitchens. Ma Chérie was a jewel of a restaurant in Obsidian City, made even more popular ever since the head chef, Cherry Espinosa, formally accepted Dean the Dragon’s claim and became his mate.

No official ceremonies or rituals have been scheduled yet, but only a fool would challenge Dean for Cherry. I would love to see it happen though. It was a rare treat to see the Dragon fight.

Now every Otherkin from the city and beyond the rift seemed to want to book a reservation. The Dragon had impeccable tastes. Word on the street is that the restaurant was booked solid for the next six months, and that was only because Cherry refused to book any dates farther than that.

Because of all that, Dean increased protection for Ma Chérie. He wanted peace for his mate, which included her business and staff. As my aims aligned with his, I often volunteered to make the restaurant a part of my rounds.

That I always had a table and meal waiting for me was a perk I could never turn down. Not that I needed such an enticement to visit. Even just a glimpse of Plum would be enough for me, though I intended to do more than just watch.

Speaking of…the delightful head chef made her way toward my corner of the restaurant. Her black hair was tamed into dual French braids, knotting the ends into a bun at the nape of her neck. Her heart-shaped face lit up when she saw me. “Is that to be your meal?” she asked by way of greeting. “You should have real food.”

It was always a blessing when a good female of worth encouraged a male like me to eat. Dean was a lucky bastard, though I wouldn’t tell him that to his face. I preferred my balls attached to my body. “I have had real food, thank you kindly. You know how much I love your Steak Fra Diavolo. And now I believe I’m enjoying a bit of a palate cleanser.”

“All right, well, I’ll leave you be. Don’t forget to take some dessert home!”

“As if I would!”

The second seating came to a close, which meant Dean encouraged any lingering diners to find their way home. I had the privilege of helping him by holding the door open and generally stared at people until they got the hint.

Cherry pretended she saw nothing as her mate shooed people away by his very presence.

I had the privilege of helping them close, despite Cherry’s objections. “If you’re going to work, I insist that you should be paid.”

“It is my privilege to make sure your establishment is safe. Besides, your food is more than enough payment.”

Cherry didn’t seem convinced, but Dean interceded, deftly turning his mate’s attention toward other matters.
