Drew carries me out to his car. “So you got a new job?”

I tweak his nose. “I already saved myself. And I’ll be able to help my sisters.”

He sets me down by his SUV. “I’m glad. They’re important.”

“Do you remember what Julia Roberts said at the end ofPretty Woman?”

He shakes his head. “I don’t watch romantic movies. Other than my mom’s favorite.”

“An Officer and a Gentleman?” I venture.

“How did you know?” He unlocks the door.

I gesture back toward the bank. “Hello! The factory scene.”

“She may have made me watch it more than once.” He leans against the side of the car. “So what did Julia Roberts say at the end ofPretty Woman?”

I lean into his chest up on tiptoe so that I’m in kissing range.

“She saves him right back.”

Chapter 40

ENSLEY

Six months later

It’s happening. It’s happening.

I shove my phone in my pocket and whip my headset off. “Carrie!” I call across the room. “Carrie!”

The other tellers turn to me, saying their spiels to the line of cars. Of course it happened on a Friday afternoon, when we’re end-to-end with cars lining up to deposit paychecks.

Carrie turns from the cash drawer where she’s counting out twenties to replenish our stashes. “Is it time?”

“It’s time!”

She shoves the drawer closed. “I’ll take your spot. You get to the hospital.” She squeezes my arm. “Tell Lila it will be horrible, but in the end, that baby will be worth it.”

I nod, passing her my headset. Carrie has been my boss since I moved to the Marietta branch, and she’s wonderful. She lets me wear whatever I want, and once again, clients come in to see what my daily outfit is.

I’ve been able to go to Lila’s prenatal appointments with no fuss about time off. And when her scumbag boyfriend tried to show uparound the seventh month, I was able to take a week to get her through the dark days after he said she was a fat sow and left her a second time.

Men are the worst.

Except Drew, of course.

I snatch my bag from the cubbies in the break room and push out into the brisk fall air. The baby is coming! I put through a quick call to Drew’s cell phone.

He picks up, a minor miracle, although the clinic is definitely less harried since Tatiana took over as office manager. She’s got the whole space humming so well that Maria took a two-week vacation over the summer.

“Is it time?” he asks.

“Yes!”

“I have one last patient, then I’ll be up there.”

“You sure? You’ll probably be sitting in the waiting room by yourself.”
