“Always gotta have something smart to say,” he murmured, giving her a light smack on her butt, and she gasped, his length sliding into her.

“I think I’ve created a monster.”

“What do you mean?”

Holly rocked over him, watching his eyelids lower the deeper he went. “I think you like spanking me.”

Declan smirked. “It’s been a fantasy of mine for two years.”

Holly laughed. “What?”

“I’m kidding. That wasn’t what I thought about.” Declan’s hands gripped her hips and without warning brought her down hard. “This is.” She cried out with pleasure as he stretched her inside, rolling her hips when he lifted her and brought her down again, finding the rhythm her body longed for.

“Every time you’d step into me with those dark, sexy eyes and that smart mouth running circles around me,” he said, meeting her motions in swift, even strokes, “all I could think about was how much I wanted to take you behind that counter in your shop and fuck the anger out of both of us.”

Holly moaned, unable to find a coherent reply as he drilled her, controlling the depth, the pace, picking up speed until she could only angle her body just right, the glide of him inside her hitting that spot again and again until—

“God, Declan, yes,” she hollered, coming with a hard shudder that wracked her body, her arms trembling as they held her above him, watching his face tighten.

“Holly.” The way he said it, like her name was a prayer, as if he was begging for salvation as he pumped into her, his body shaking under hers, fingers digging into her muscles but she didn’t care. Being with Declan, falling onto his chest in the aftermath of their lovemaking, and the sensation of his big, callused hands trailing along the skin of her back, her ass, and thighs and back up, made her feel cherished. Cared for. While some men would have already pushed her off, Declan didn’t seem in a hurry to let her go, and she liked that.

Maybe a little too much.

The thought had Holly lifting up and sliding off Declan. “I’m going to get cleaned up.”

Declan sat up, catching her hand before she could retreat. “Wait.” He stalled her escape, his green eyes locked on hers. “There’s one more thing we didn’t discuss.”

“What?”

“After the benefits. Do I stay? Or should I go back to my room?”

Holly searched his face for any signal as to the answer he wanted and finally said, “Sleeping together has certain implications. If we’re trying to keep things from getting complicated…”

“Then I should go back to my room. I got it.” Declan climbed to his feet and cupped her face in his hands. “Good night, Holly.”

Regret twisted her stomach in knots. A soft brush of his lips, and he released her to gather his clothes. Holly didn’t wait for him to finish before escaping into her bathroom, closing the door behind her.

If you wanted him to stay, why didn’t you say so?

Holly’s fingers brushed her swollen lips, the taste of Declan still lingering, and she didn’t have a good answer.

CHAPTER 29

Sleep eluded declan, and he spent several hours staring up at the ceiling, with Leo pacing back and forth across his stomach as though he could feel Declan’s discontent. The last time he’d had sex was with his now ex-girlfriend before he’d moved back to Mistletoe, and before that, spending the night after being intimate had never been a question with the girls he dated because they always wanted more, usually more than he was emotionally ready to give. Things between Holly and him were complicated, which was why he’d asked her what she wanted. He hated that he’d been more than a little disappointed by her answer, but she’d said repeatedly that she wasn’t the relationship type.

Declan had thought the same way about himself, but now he wasn’t sure. Sex was good, but with Holly he’d wanted it to be better. He’d enjoyed watching her come apart, relished the way she called his name when she came, and he wanted it to happen again. He wanted to enjoy what they had and not worry about what the other one was thinking, but that’s exactly what he’d been doing for hours.

Declan set Leo off to the side and got out of bed, wearing only a pair of loose sweats. He opened the door and padded out to the kitchen for a glass of water. Maybe he’d grab one of the containers of stackable chips he’d bought earlier, too, and after a midnight snack be able to fall asleep.

Leo trotted after him, stopping off at his food dish by the back door and crunching away at his dry kibble. Declan grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it with ice, wincing at the loud clang of it against the glass.

“Couldn’t sleep?” Holly’s soft voice asked behind him.

Declan turned to find her in a long t-shirt night dress with a bear on the front, her hair thrown up in a messy bun.

“Not a bit.”

“Me neither. I was listening to an audio book.”
