Holly’s full lips curved into a smile in the dim light. “That might take a while.”

“I bet I’ll prove you wrong.” Declan dipped his head before she could make a comeback and captured her lips, gripping her hips in both his hands as he kissed her. She tasted of soda pop and Holly, so sweet he caught himself nipping at her plump bottom lip. He lifted her up until they were eye level before pinning her lower body with his, and Holly didn’t hesitate to wrap both her legs and arms around him.

It had been years since he’d kissed a woman, but not a single memory compared to Holly’s eager mouth meeting his, her tongue fencing with his while her fingers ran through his hair, nails lightly scraping against his scalp and drawing a deep moan from him.

While he might be this side of buzzed, his inhibitions weren’t entirely gone. Declan knew people liked to use the loop-around gravel drive.

“Holly,” he murmured against her lips. “We need to go back inside.”

“I thought we weren’t going to play red light green light anymore,” she countered, arching her lower body against his already aching cock as his fingers dug into her hips.

“I’m not, I swear. You have no idea how badly I want to make you come against the side of this building.” He moved back enough so he could meet her dazed, heavy-lidded eyes and said, “But I also don’t want our first time together interrupted when someone comes out here looking for you.”

“Argh, fine.” She gave him a hard-fast kiss before pushing him back, and he dropped her clumsily back onto her feet. “Let’s tell everyone good-bye and go back to my place.”

“Hang on a second.” He took two steps after her, reaching for her arm. “I don’t…I don’t want anyone to know about us.”

Holly stilled, spinning around to face him. “Why not?”

“I’m sort of friends with your brother. I don’t think he’d like me and you—I just don’t want to complicate this with other people.”

Holly cocked her head to the side, and for a second he thought she was going to deck him. Instead she nodded slowly. “Fine. I can keep a secret.”

“Thank you.”

“Do you have your keys and phone on you?” she asked, holding her hand out.

“Yeah.”

“Give them to me. I’ll text Clark to tell Merry I’m taking you home because you drank too much and can’t drive. With any luck, they won’t jump to any conclusions considering you were drinking those sweet cocktails sure to make any man sick.”

“Not women?” he asked, fishing through his pockets and handing her his keys.

“Pshaw, not me.” Holly flashed him a sunny smile as she took them. “I can handle anything you throw at me. I just didn’t want to drink when I was pissed off. Never a good combo.”

“I guess that’s my fault.”

Holly leaned up on her tiptoes, and he dipped down to reach her lips. “I’m willing to forgive and forget. First we gotta get out of here.”

“How are you going to explain getting from my place to yours if you drive me home?”

“I’ll walk from your house. My sister will balk, but I’ll tell her to mind her own business.”

“You can’t walk home from my place.”

“Declan—”

“No, I mean, I’m sure you’re capable, but I’m not staying with my dad. I’ve been sleeping at the store.”

Holly stared up at him. “Why?”

“I told you, things with my parents are—” Hiccup. “—complicated.”

“You’ve been sleeping at the store?”

“In the back room. There’s a cot, and I set up all Leo’s stuff.”

“Leo…your cat? You and your cat are living in the hardware store?”
