Page 25 of Along Came Holly

Holly picked up the bat, spinning it in her hand. If anything, she could always dress up as Negan for Halloween next year.

She responded: I don’t have the patience in the morning for that. I’m barely functioning before my first cup.

I’ll have to bring you over some.

Holly’s stomach fluttered as she typed: I never turn down free coffee.

Delivering gourmet coffee sounded suspiciously like a date, unless…

You’re not going to put something funky in it, are you?

She put her car into gear and backed out of her parking space, but instead of heading directly home Holly drove towards Nick’s apartment. Despite the shifting direction of her interest in Declan, that didn’t change the fact that someone in her family had betrayed her. If it wasn’t her big brother, she’d be hitting her sister’s place next.

Holly parked along the street and before climbing out she grabbed the bat off the seat. She held her phone up and snapped a selfie of her and the bat and sent it to Delilah.

Say hello to my wooden friend.

Holly backed out of her inbox and saw Declan had shot her another message while she was driving.

LOL I promise the first cup is funk free. How do you take it?

It took a moment for Holly to realize what he was talking about and laughed. She responded: A little coffee and a lot of cream.

Any particular kind of cream? I have special stuff if you want to leave room.

Holly climbed the stairs to the second-floor apartment with the bat over her shoulder, stopping a few doors down. She knocked on the door and when Nick answered, Holly said loudly, “Nicky, yous got some ’splaining to do!”

“What are you doing? Is that—”

Holly pointed the bat at him, cutting off his question. “Did you or did you not tell Declan Gallagher I am afraid of snakes?”

“I did not. Why?”

She squinted one eye at him. “Are you lying?”

“Why would I lie?”

“What’s going on out here?” Noel asked, coming up alongside Nick.

“Just my sister threatening me.”

Noel smacked his arm. “What did you do?”

“Nothing, she thinks I told Declan Gallagher she’s scared of snakes but I didn’t.”

Noel stepped back, waving her hand. “He doesn’t have that high, squeaky thing in his voice when he lies, so he’s not your culprit. And in case I’m on your suspect list, I swear I’m innocent.”

Holly sighed. “I was pretty sure it was Merry with Clark as her mouthpiece, but I had to be sure.”

“Now that we’ve got that cleared up, you want to come in? We ordered a large pack of tacos and there’s plenty.”

“I love tacos,” Holly said, stepping inside.

“Hey, we are not feeding her,” Nick protested as the two of them walked farther into the apartment. “She just threatened me!”

Noel rolled her eyes. “But did she follow through? No. Stop being so dramatic.”

“Yeah, Nick. Why you gotta make a big deal about everything?”
