Page 23 of Along Came Holly

“Aha! It was Clark who said something about the snakes, which means Merry gave me up!”

The phone rang, and he picked up with his free hand, afraid she’d try to escape while he was distracted. “I had two full days to plot. I could have easily talked to Nick.”

“Did you?” she prodded, but he hit the talk button.

“Mistletoe Hardware, Declan speaking.”

“What do snowmen use to make snow babies?” a man’s voice asked.

Most of the jokes had been family friendly, but Declan already knew where this one was going. “What?”

“Snowballs!”

“Sorry, bud. Not even a chuckle. Have a good day.”

“Hey, wait! Are you Holly’s boyfriend?”

Declan froze. “What?”

“Is she single? Can you tell her Wyatt from Utah would love to take her out and I’m not that far—”

Declan hung up the phone, his heart hammering in his chest.

Holly frowned. “What’s wrong? What did they say?”

“Don’t you think it’s dangerous to let strangers on the internet know where you live?”

Holly’s eyes widened. “My followers have known since the beginning I live in Mistletoe. It goes along with the elf persona. What’s gotten into you?”

“That guy on the phone just now? Somebody named Wyatt in Utah, not too far away.”

“Was he threatening to hurt me?”

“No,” Declan grunted. “He wants to take you out.”

Holly released a breathless laugh. “Well, that’s a relief.”

“Really? I think it’s disturbing.”

“Declan, I’m on several social media sites. Even if I didn’t put it out there where I live, people could easily find out. They have found out. Most of them are harmless.”

Jealousy and worry warred within him like a vortex, a part of him arguing Holly was a grown woman who’d been doing this a long time, and the rest of him knowing it only took one loon to tip the deck.

“What about the ones who aren’t?” Declan asked quietly, realizing his fingers still circled her wrist a little tighter now. The thought of Holly in that big house alone when some obsessed fan showed up at her place bottomed out his stomach.

Holly didn’t shake him off or get angry, but came around the counter next to him without breaking contact. “Are you worried about me, Declan?”

Why was she looking at him like that with those soft brown eyes sucking him in?

“I just think it’s reckless to put everything out there on social media.”

“Because I’m a woman?”

Her sweet perfume surrounded him, and he released her wrist, his fingers brushing back a strand of hair that had fallen into her face. “No. No one should share too much online, man or woman.”

“At least if someone abducted me, you wouldn’t have to listen to my music anymore.”

“That’s not funny, Elf.”
