“Not if I see you first.”
Declan jogged after Sally, keeping pace with her once he caught up.
“You don’t have to worry about Sam, you know,” Sally said out of the blue.
“What do you mean?”
“It’s obvious Holly is completely into you. I don’t know if you’re serious about her, but in case you had doubts, I wouldn’t stress.”
“While I appreciate the assurances, I don’t really want to discuss my love life with anyone.”
“Wow, you really are a grouch,” Sally said with a huff, stomping ahead of him.
“So I’ve been told.”
CHAPTER 34
“You like declan, don’t you?” Sam asked, keeping pace with Holly across the snow-covered park.
Holly’s first reaction was to scoff and tell him he was crazy, but she was tired of hiding it, especially from herself.
“I do.” Holly looked up at Sam, frowning. “Why do you ask?”
Sam nudged her shoulder with his. “As your secret boyfriend, I feel like I should get some say in who you spend time with.”
“Secret boyfriend?”
“Oh yeah, you haven’t heard that rumor? You and I are keeping it on the low until after the wedding and then we’re going public.”
“Interesting. And who started this rumor?”
“I’m not sure, but Sally asked if it was true, and she’s not the first one.”
“Declan thought the same thing.”
“Really? And he didn’t give you up? Brave man.”
“Speaking of brave men, Sally didn’t even look at you tonight. Did you finally come clean with her?”
“I did.”
“It didn’t go well, huh?”
“She didn’t appreciate my honesty the way you thought she would.”
“Sally is gorgeous, so I’m not sure why you aren’t interested. Not to slut shame you, but you haven’t exactly been particular about your sexual partners.”
“Haven’t you noticed I don’t sleep with women in my inner circle because I don’t need the complications? If I take Sally up on what she’s offering, Merry will slit my throat for hurting her friend and you know me, Hol. I don’t mean to be a dick, but I’m not the guy you marry. I’m the fun guy who screws your brains out before you meet the one.”
“I don’t think anyone is immune to the one, even you, but you’re right. Getting involved with friends, even friends of a friend, isn’t a good idea.”
“Are you trying to talk yourself out of dating Declan?” he asked.
“No, I’m just agreeing it’s a bad idea, but that doesn’t mean I have to follow it.”
“Just be careful. Us being an item isn’t the only rumor I’ve heard.”
Holly slowed her pace to a full stop and faced Sam. “What other rumors are circulating?”
