“Why not? I’m collecting all these sisters lately.”

“Yeah, but I already had brothers. And I didn’t need more.”

He heard a loud cackle from inside the house. Lachlan. “Too bad for you,” he said, “because you’re stuck with us.”

“You guys are the worst,” she said.

“Or are we the best?” Brody asked.

“For sure, the best,” Hunter said, smiling.

Hunter and Elsie were carrying platters of food.

And he suddenly felt like a little bit of a jerk that he hadn’t brought any snacks to poker night.

But he’d been busy. Definitely thinking about other things. Charity was in the kitchen, cheerfully baking cookies.

Really, Lach did have it made.

“Looks great,” he said, pulling up a chair and sitting down.

“You seem like you’re in a good mood,” Lachlan said, eyeing him speculatively.

“I am just really thrilled with the work that we’re doing here at the ranch,” Brody said with an absolutely straight face. “It feels good to give back.”

“Yeah, I don’t think you care about that at all,” Lachlan said.

“You don’t know me.”

“Oh, I know you,” Lachlan said. “Unfortunately for me.”

“You’re such a jerk,” Charity said.

“Hey,” Lachlan said. “You are supposed to unquestionably be Team Me.”

Charity’s already innocent face somehow softened, her eyes going rounder. “Why is that?”

“Because I have been your best friend for years.”

She sharpened. “Right. And I have spent all those years stitching you up, and pulling you out of scrapes. So you tell me exactly what I owe you?”

“Harsh,” Hunter said. “I like it.”

“Poor Lachlan,” said Elsie, shaking her head.

“What? Poor Lachlan because we’re so mean to him?”

“No,” Elsie grinned. “Poor Lachlan. Because he’s him.”

And that got a good laugh out of everybody.

“Where are Nelly and Tag?” Lach asked.

“Went down to visit Nelly’s mom,” Hunter said.

“Where’s Gus?” Brody asked.

“I find it best not to ask where Gus and Alaina are when they decline to show their faces at things like this.”
