“I’m not going to let you get stuck,” he said.

“I’ll meet you...”

“Just come back with us,” Benny said.

Which was how he found himself sitting in the front seat of Elizabeth’s car, being driven back to the cabin.

“Come on in,” she said softly, when she turned the car off.

So he followed her and Benny into the house.

It had a distinctly more lived-in feel than even just a couple of days ago. Little boy’s shoes, some toys on the floor, and a bowl of fruit on the counter.

“Where’d you get the fruit?” Which was maybe the dumbest question he’d ever asked anybody.

“Your sister-in-law brought it by. She said it came from her sisters.”

“Oh yeah. The Sullivans have a big garden.” That was underselling it. “I mean, actually it’s huge. They’re trying to get a store set up on the property. We’ve been working on it, weather permitting.”

“So they’re another family that has a stake in the ranch?”

“It is actually four separate ranches,” he said. “Each family owns a plot, but we work cooperatively.”

“And now the Sullivans have married into your family, and the Garretts are about to?”

“That is correct.”

“Any chance of the Kings marrying in?”

He huffed a laugh. “Not unless big changes are on the horizon. Considering Arizona is the only woman, and she’s married, and the rest of them are... Not my or Lachlan’s type.”

“I see,” she said.

“Mom,” Benny said. “Go change.”

She startled. “Well, ask nicely,” she said, before turning and walking down the hall and closing the door behind her. And he couldn’t stop himself from wondering which article of clothing she was going to remove first.

He imagined the jacket coming off. Then her shirt. And then her hands would go around and unclasp her bra...

“I don’t understand how grown-ups can stand around talking about fruit.”

He looked at Benny. “Someday you will.”

Because someday, there would be a woman that Benny thought was beautiful, even if he shouldn’t think so much about how she was beautiful, and he would stand around and talk to that woman about anything, just so he could watch her lips move.

And he was back to thinking inappropriate thoughts.

Elizabeth came out of her bedroom dressed in jeans, hiking boots, and a sweater that conformed lovingly to her figure.

Damn, she was hot.

“We might as well walk,” he said. “There’s a trail that we can take from up here that’ll lead us straight down there.”

“Sure,” she said, managing to look reluctant, even as she led the charge out the front door.

Benny quickly passed both of them up.

“You don’t know where you’re going, Ben,” he said.
