I know what kind of place this is, but it’s still a shock to see people having sex out in the open.

Couples and groups of people in varying states of undress are draped over couches and chairs and cushions. Some are groping and kissing. Others are watching. Others have eyes only for each other, lost in the thrill of fucking in public.

I accidentally lock eyes with a man as he takes his partner from behind, and I’m the one who gasps, whirling around only to see Richard and Jacquelyn making out on the dance floor already. One of his hands is cupping the juncture between her legs, and the other squeezes her breast, which has escaped its strappy prison.

Oh my god. If I ever wondered whether I have voyeuristic tendencies, I guess the answer is a big fat no. Because I have zero desire to watch my old roommate, who I haven’t even seen in years, get railed by some stranger in a public place.

Turning away quickly, I flee to the bar even though I still don’t really want another drink, unsure of where else I should go.

Trying to make myself as unobtrusive as possible, I stare into the middle distance, blurring my vision so my gaze doesn’t accidentally land on something I don’t want to see.

But then someone touches my elbow, and when I glance down, there’s a cocktail in front of me.

“I see you like to watch,” an older man says, leaning against the bar and grinning at me through his neatly trimmed beard. “First time? I can always spot a virgin.”

I choke on a breath and cough to cover it up. “I’ve had enough to drink, thank you.”

“Oh, come on.” He winks, sliding the drink closer to me. “You look like you could use a little liquid fortitude. You haven’t seen anything yet.” He moves a little closer, dropping his voice. “I’d be happy to show you. There’s much, much more to experience here.”

He reaches down and boldly squeezes my thigh, and I stiffen, nearly jumping off the stool I was perched on.

“Where are you off to?” he asks as I quickly put the leather covered bar stool between the two of us. He chuckles, winking at me. “You like to run? That’s wonderful. I live for the chase.”

My skin crawls a little at the teasing tone of his voice. I don’t judge anyone for coming to a place like this, but even in a sex club, I figured consent would still matter. This man clearly doesn’t care about that though, since both my words and body language have been nothing but red lights, and he’s straight up ignoring them. It’s creepy as fuck, and it makes me want to get out of here.

“No. I just need to check on my friend. Alone,” I add firmly before spinning around and trying to pick out Jacquelyn from among the writhing bodies on the dance floor.

I finally get lucky, spotting her on the edge of one of the secondary stages. She’s fanning herself with her hand, her straps—and hair—in disarray. I make my way toward her quickly, glancing over my shoulder to make sure creepy beard dude didn’t follow me.

“Had enough?” I ask hopefully when I reach her.

“Oh, hell no. I’m just getting started,” she says, throwing her head back and laughing. “This place is amazing, Sophie. The energy in here … it’s crackling! Can’t you feel it?”

I can still feel the old man’s fingers on my thigh, but I’m sure that isn’t what she’s talking about.

“Actually, I think I’m going to go,” I say. “You want to come with? Did you lose Richard?”

“He’s making arrangements for us to go into the next room,” Jacquelyn tells me, grinning recklessly. “I can’t wait to see what else there is. Come on. You have to stick around.”

“I’m feeling kind of cashed out,” I say. “Jet lag, I think. I’ll just go back to your place to grab my stuff. But you can stay here if you want.”

“Aw, really?” She makes a face, pouting her lips out. “Are you sure? You don’t mind if I stay?”

“No, it’s fine. I know you really wanted to check this place out, and I don’t want to stop you. We’ll hang out tomorrow, once I’ve gotten a good night’s sleep.”

Jacquelyn sighs, then nods, waggling her eyebrows at me. “Okay. I’ll tell you all about it tomorrow—blow by blow, baby.”

I have to laugh at that. “I’m sure you will.”

She gives me a little wave as I slip away through the crowd, picking my way carefully around a group of what looks like at least six people swapping partners as they dance and grind against each other. The bouncer who let us into this space only gives me a cursory glance as I head back into the main dance club, and a few minutes later, I step out onto the street.

The cool night air is just what I need to clear my mind from the club, and instead of hailing a cab to take me back to Jacquelyn’s place, I decide to walk for a while. I button and belt my coat over my dress, since it’s actually longer than the hemline of the scanty dress, and that makes me feel somewhat closer to my usual self.

Although, who am I kidding? I’ll never be quite the same as I was. There are things I witnessed tonight that I can’t unsee.

It just wasn’t my scene.

Jacquelyn can tease me about being boring all she wants, but I really didn’t want to spend the entire night fending off men like creepy beard guy.
