I rip the delicate fabric, getting it out of my way as she gasps softly. When I stroke her clit with my index finger, she sighs, her body shuddering.

I expect her to flop forward against me, but instead, she starts to rise, positioning herself to get me inside her. She whimpers under her breath, desperate to be filled by me.

And I need her just as much.

She lowers her lips to my ear. “Do you have a condom?”

I do, of course—in my wallet—but I can’t fathom stopping right now to slide it on. I shake my head. “I don’t want anything between us. Not right now. I need nothing but skin on skin, to be that fucking close to you. Are you on the pill?”

She nods, breathless, a deep flush across her cheeks. I move her hips down, lowering her onto my dick, and she lets out a keening moan as her pussy opens for me.

“You’re so good,” I groan. Her head is thrown back as my cock slides against her bare walls for the first time. “Fuck, you’re so good. So tight for me, every single time.”

There are tears of pleasure in her eyes as she begins to shift up and down, pumping me in and out of her. She’s making the most perfect sounds, little whimpers of ecstasy. I bite my lip hard and squeeze her hips, letting one hand travel down to grip her ass.

Being inside her like this… it’s incredible. Even though she’s on top, she’s pliant, letting me take control. I thrust hard and fast.

“Do you like that?” I grunt between thrusts. “You like being filled up? You needed that?”

She nods, wailing as I pound into her. “Yes! I—ah!”

Her walls clench as she comes, howling into my ear. I hold her tight as she crests over the wave. Seconds after it’s over, I allow myself to come too, filling her with warmth.

She collapses against my chest, and I hold her tight.

So tight that I know I’ll never let go.

I slump against Declan’s heaving chest. One of his arms is snaked around my body, clinging to me. I let him. After today, and everything that happened, he could hold me like this forever and I’d let him.

Now that I understand more about him, about his family, it all makes so much sense. I feel dizzy from all the information, but it falls neatly into place.

Declan is hard—driven. Of course he is. He was raised hard. He had to be driven. But his life has left him with deep emotional scars, and I don’t know if they’ll ever heal. The thought of being with someone like this—someone so damaged from his youth—scares me a little.

But at the same time, I want to help him. All I can think about right now is letting him hold me and hoping that it brings him some peace.

I want to show him that it doesn’t have to be that way. That not everyone is like his father. That love doesn’t have to end with cruelty and bitterness.

After a few minutes, Declan loosens his hold on me. I sit upright on his lap, gazing at him. He reaches up to brush a lock of blonde hair from where it’s stuck to my forehead and gives me a crooked smile.

“Thank you for coming with me,” he breathes, his voice hoarse. “I’m sorry it ended with such a disaster.”

I let out a huff. “Well, I don’t have a family anymore,” I say. “Being part of a family gathering means a lot to me. And what would it be without all the messy parts?” I smile at him.

“The messy parts?”

“The parts that make it real,” I say. “The parts that show you how much more there is to a person.”

He stares at me, something burning in his eyes, for a long moment. Then he pulls me down for a kiss. A hungry kiss. Forceful. The kind of kiss that swirls with unspoken things.

Chapter 38

Sophie

There’s only one downside to spending my nights with Declan, and it’s that I’m getting so used to being around him that it’s harder to be patient in the times when we’re apart. Like at work, where my focus levels are decreasing by the day.
