“Oh, Jax? Great. That’s nice.” She blushes a little. Whoa, wait a second, how did I miss this? My friend has a crush.

I place the phone down and cross my arms. “Why is your face bright red?”

“It’s not. What are you talking about? It must be the wine. Shut up.”

“Sure. If we had been drinking any.” I smirk. “Are you feeling all right or has Jax gotten you a little hot and bothered?” With everything going on, I hadn’t even realized she had a thing for him. I need a distraction from my own life, so I plan to have a little more fun with this.

I don’t know much about Jax, but he seems like a nice enough guy. Lexi could use a good man in her life for once. She’s had casual dates here or there, but nothing ever comes of it. Her heart is still badly bruised, so she tends not to give men a fair shot. I guess finding your fiancé screwing a secretary on top of his desk will do that to a girl.

I smile mischievously then go back to my phone.

She scowls. “Why do you have that look on your face?”

“Oh, no reason.” I start typing on my phone.

“Lilah, what are you up to?”

“Absolutely nothing.” I bite my tongue to suppress a laugh.

Lilah: Thanks either way guys. Well let me go back to Lexi. She keeps wondering who I’m speaking to.

Gabe: Okay, no problem. We’ll talk to you soon.

Jax: Wait, Lexi is there? Tell her I said hi, will you?

Well, this crush is definitely not a one-way street. It’d be awesome if my friend and Damian’s friend ended up together. The little teenage girl inside my head is jumping up and down at the thought. This is the first idea that has made me this excited in forever.

Lilah: She says hey back and hopes she can see you soon, maybe not in court next time.

Jax: Really? Tell her we’ll have to plan something soon. I’ll text her.

Lilah: That sounds great. TTYL guys.

“So, are you going to tell me what you were talking to them about?”

“Nope. Nothing important.” I feign innocence.

“Lilah. I hope you didn’t say anything to Jax about me. I have zero interest in dating him. He’s a total player. And, he isn’t even that hot.” Who is the girl fooling? That man is so objectively good looking, most of the female population would agree. Oh, and she just blushed again and probably didn't even know it. Lexi doesn’t do that for just anyone. I guess she forgets how well I know her.

“Whatever you say. Turn Friends back on.”

She peers at me while unpausing the show. As the episode starts up again, her cell phone vibrates. She looks at the phone then at me. “Lilah?Whatdid you do?”

I press my lips, but I can’t help the small laugh that escapes. She shakes her head, part amusement and part agitation fight for real estate on her face. Oops, I guess Jax couldn’t wait to schedule that date.

Chapter 31

Lilah

Idon’t know how much more makeup I can smear on my face to cover up these ugly purple-yellow bruises. At least my nose looks okay. The doctor told me I’m healing wonderfully but that the bruises will take a while to go away.

I rub more foundation on them in hopes I look somewhat human for the meeting today. This will be the first time in five days Damian and I’ll see each other, so I want to look pretty. The last time I laid eyes on him was during his arraignment.

Every day I miss him more. Is this what our lives will be like? Constantly craving to be together but somehow always falling short? I guess so. But I’ll wait as long as it takes because there’s no one else for me. It’s as simple as that.

People have relationships while one is in prison all the time. We can do this. I wonder if they’ll allow conjugal visits. Oh no, what if he’s transferred somewhere far? I want to believe everything will work out, but there’s a deep doubt building within me, one I can’t quite shake.

I rub my temples as I stare into the full-length mirror. Feeling as though I should look professional, I put my hair up in a high ponytail and slip into a navy pencil skirt and a white blouse.
